Abstract

A method and a system for producing images of a subject, such as the heart of a human being. The method may comprise acquiring ultrasound images of the subject with a catheter comprising a position sensor. The method may also comprise capturing a plurality of 4D surface registration points in the acquired ultrasound images corresponding to points on the subject. The method may also comprise registering, in space and time, a high-resolution 4D model of the subject with the plurality of 4D surface registration points. The method may also comprise displaying high resolution, real-time images of the subject during a medical procedure based on the registration of the high resolution 4D model to the 4D surface registration points. Embodiments of the present invention are especially useful in left atrium ablation procedures.

Claims (33)

1. A computer-implemented method comprising:

capturing a plurality of surface registration points of a portion of an organ from (i) an ultrasound image of the portion of the organ acquired by a catheter from within an anatomical structure in a patient's body; and (ii) data regarding the position of the catheter when the ultrasound image was acquired; and

registering a portion of a 4D model of the organ with the plurality of surface registration points by:

applying a rigid global registration; and

applying a local, free-form, non-rigid registration.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the rigid global registration comprises determining a rough alignment according to a position of the patient on a bed.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 2 , wherein the rigid global registration further comprises refining the rough alignment by matching registration points associated with one or more regions of the portion of the organ that are identifiable in the ultrasound image with a corresponding one or more regions in the 4D model portion.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the rigid global registration comprises registering a time at which the ultrasound image was captured with a time associated with the portion of the 4D model.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 4 , wherein registering a time at which the ultrasound image was captured with a time associated with the portion of the 4D model is performed according to an organ timing signal.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 4 , wherein registering the time at which the ultrasound image was captured with a time associated with the portion of the 4D model comprises associating the plurality of surface registration points with a particular time point of the 4D model according to a probability maximization function.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the rigid global registration comprises accounting for a variable error in different pixels in the ultrasound image.

8. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the local, free-form, non-rigid registration comprises the use of a radial basis function.

9. A non-transitory computer readable medium having stored thereon instructions, which when executed by a processor, cause the processor to:

capture a plurality of surface registration points of a portion of an organ from (i) an ultrasound image of the portion of the organ acquired by a catheter from within an anatomical structure in a patient's body; and (ii) data regarding the position of the catheter when the ultrasound image was acquired; and

register a portion of a 4D model of the organ with the plurality of surface registration points by:

applying a rigid global registration; and

applying a local, free-form, non-rigid registration.

10. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 9 , wherein the rigid global registration comprises determining a rough alignment according to a position of the patient on a bed.

11. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the rigid global registration further comprises refining the rough alignment by matching registration points associated with one or more regions of the portion of the organ that are identifiable in the ultrasound image with a corresponding one or more regions in the 4D model portion.

12. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 9 , wherein the rigid global registration comprises registering a time at which the ultrasound image was captured with a time associated with the portion of the 4D model.

13. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 12 , wherein registering the time at which the ultrasound image was captured with a time associated with the portion of the 4D model is performed according to an organ timing signal.

14. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 12 , wherein registering the time at which the ultrasound image was captured with a time associated with the portion of the 4D model comprises associating the plurality of surface registration points with a particular time point of the 4D model according to a probability maximization function.

15. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 9 , wherein the rigid global registration comprises accounting for the a variable error in different pixels in the ultrasound image.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 9 , wherein the local, free-form, non-rigid registration comprises the use of a radial basis function.

17. A computer-implemented method comprising:

capturing a plurality of surface registration points of a portion of an organ with a catheter from within an anatomical structure in a patient's body without the catheter touching the tissue of the organ;

capturing data regarding the position of the catheter when the surface registration points are acquired; and

registering a portion of a 4D model of the organ with the plurality of surface registration points by:

applying a rigid global registration, the rigid global registration comprising accounting for a variable error in different ones of the surface registration points according to the respective locations of the surface registration points relative to the catheter; and

applying a local, free-form, non-rigid registration.

18. The computer-implemented method of claim 17 , wherein the catheter comprises an ultrasound transducer, the plurality of surface registration points are captured from an ultrasound image acquired with the transducer from within the anatomical structure, and accounting for a variable error in different ones of the surface registration points according to the respective locations of the surface registration points relative to the catheter comprises accounting for the variable error according to respective distances of pixels of the ultrasound image from the center of the image.

19. The computer-implemented method of claim 18 , wherein accounting for the variable error according to respective distances of pixels of the ultrasound image from the center of the image comprises computing an angular error of an imaging plane of the ultrasound transducer.

20. The computer-implemented method of claim 18 , wherein accounting for the variable error according to respective distances of pixels of the ultrasound image from the center of the image comprises assigning a weighting parameter to the pixels in an error minimization, respective values of the weighting parameter assigned according to respective distances of pixels from the center of the image.
