Abstract

A surgical portal assembly provides access to underlying tissue. The surgical portal has a seal which includes a gel layer and a fabric layer. The seal includes internal surfaces defining a passage for reception and passage of a surgical object in substantial sealed relation therewith.

Claims (25)

1. A surgical portal assembly comprising:

a portal adapted to provide access to underlying tissue and having a longitudinal opening extending along a longitudinal axis of the portal, and defining proximal and distal ends; and

a seal assembly having a seal passage for reception and passage of a surgical object introduced through the portal, the seal assembly including:

a seal housing having upper and lower walls and defining an internal chamber therebetween;

a monolithically formed seal element mounted in the internal chamber, the monolithically formed seal element comprising a gel material, and including;

a collar in contacting relation with each of the upper and lower walls of the seal housing;

an inner seal segment including opposing proximal and distal faces, the inner seal segment depending radially inwardly from the collar; and

an annular segment depending from the distal face of the inner seal segment, the annular segment in contacting relation with at least the lower wall of the seal housing.

2. The surgical portal assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the annular segment is radially spaced from the collar to permit radial movement of the inner seal segment upon offset manipulation of the surgical object.

3. The surgical portal assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the inner seal segment includes inner surfaces, the inner surfaces defining the seal passage for passage of the surgical object.

4. The surgical portal assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the inner seal segment is sloped in a distal direction to define a general funnel configuration.

5. The surgical portal assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the collar includes outer and inner annular collars, the inner seal segment depending at least radially inwardly from the inner annular collar.

6. The surgical portal assembly according to claim 5 , wherein the annular segment is radially spaced from the inner annular collar to permit radial movement of the inner seal segment upon offset manipulation of the surgical object.

7. The surgical portal assembly according to claim 5 , wherein the annular segment is disposed radially inward of the inner annular collar.

8. The surgical portal assembly according to claim 5 , wherein at least one of the inner annular collar or the outer annular collar is in contacting relation with at least one of the upper and lower walls of the seal housing.

9. The surgical portal assembly according to claim 8 , wherein each of the inner annular collar and the outer annular collar is in contacting relation with each of the upper and lower walls of the seal housing.

10. A surgical portal assembly comprising:

a portal adapted to provide access to underlying tissue and having a longitudinal opening extending along a longitudinal axis of the portal, and defining proximal and distal ends;

a seal housing having upper and lower walls and defining an internal chamber therebetween; and

a monolithically formed seal disposed within the internal chamber of the seal housing, the seal comprising a gel material and defining a seal axis, the seal including:

an outer collar in contacting relation with each of the upper and lower walls of the seal housing;

an inner collar disposed radially inward of the outer collar in contacting relation with each of the upper and lower walls of the seal housing; and

a seal element including opposing proximal and distal faces, the seal element depending radially inwardly from the inner collar and having inner surfaces defining a seal passage for passage of a surgical object in sealed relation therewith.

11. The surgical portal assembly according to claim 10 including first and second fabric layers arranged in juxtaposed relation on the respective proximal and distal faces of the seal element.

12. The surgical portal assembly according to claim 10 wherein the monolithically formed seal includes an annular segment depending from the distal face of the seal element, the annular segment in contacting relation with at least the lower wall of the seal housing.
