Abstract

The present invention is a device and system for manipulating a surgical tool at an intended location, e.g., a confined or inaccessible space, which includes a surgical anchor having at least one opening, wherein the opening provides a catch for a pin; and at least one anchor point to position and orient a surgical tool inside a human body. The apparatus and system of the present invention allows for the use of multiple intra-abdominal surgical tools inserted through a single incision.

Claims (17)

1. A surgical anchor system comprising:

an elongated member comprising a cavity that contains a material selected from one of a ferrous, ferromagnetic and magnetic materials;

a surgical tool coupled to the elongated member and partially bounded by a portion of the elongated member, the surgical tool being coupled to the elongated member such that a distal end of the surgical tool can travel from a collapsed position to a non-collapsed position through a non-linear path: and

an external casing comprising a magnetic stack;

where the elongated member and the casing are configured to generate a coupling force of at least 500 grams at a distance of 10 millimeters between them; and

where the elongated member is adapted to be positioned within a patient's abdominal cavity using the casing positioning outside the patient's abdominal cavity.

2. The system of claim 1 , where if the surgical tool is in the collapsed position, the elongated member and the surgical tool can pass through a circular perimeter of 15 mm.

3. The system of claim 1 , where the surgical tool comprises at least one tool selected from the group consisting of a camera, a retractor, a paddle, a hose, a cutting tool, a light, a hook, and a net.

4. The system of claim 1 , where the elongated member comprises two cavities that each contains a material selected from one of a ferrous, ferromagnetic, and magnetic materials.

5. The system of claim 4 , where the magnetic stack comprises two openings each containing a magnetic material.

6. The system of claim 5 , where the magnetic material is contained in the respective openings in an N-S orientation or an S-N orientation.

7. A surgical anchor system comprising: an elongated member comprising two cavities that each contains a material selected from one of a ferrous, ferromagnetic and magnetic materials; a surgical tool coupled to the elongated member such that a distal end of the surgical tool can travel from a collapsed position to a non-collapsed position through a non- linear path, the surgical tool being selected from the group consisting of a retractor, a cutting tool, and a hook; an external casing comprising a magnetic stack;

where the elongated member and the casing are configured to generate a coupling force of at least 500 grams at a distance of 10 millimeters between them; and

where the elongated member is adapted to be positioned within a patient's abdominal cavity using the casing positioning outside the patient's abdominal cavity.

8. The system of claim 7 , where if the surgical tool is in the collapsed position, the elongated member and the surgical tool can pass through a circular perimeter of 15 mm.

9. The system of claim 7 , where the magnetic stack comprises two openings each containing a magnetic material.

10. The system of claim 9 , where the magnetic material is contained in the respective openings in an N-S orientation or an S-N orientation.
