Abstract

A new and novel impact energy attenuation material, impact energy attenuation module employing the material and a fit system for optimizing the performance thereof is provided. Non-linear energy attenuating material consisting of a plurality of loose particles is employed for impact energy dissipation. The loose particles are preferably spherical elastomeric balls. An impact energy attenuation module includes a container that holds the loose particles. The impact energy attenuation module can be provided in a wide range of sizes and shapes and the loose particles can be provided in different materials, sizes, density, compaction and hardness to suit with the application at hand. A matrix of impact energy attenuation module are provided about the surface of a shell to provide the required impact energy attenuation. The material, impact energy attenuation module and system of the present invention are well suited for protection of body parts and other cushioning and protection needs.

Claims (22)

1. An impact energy attenuation system to prevent trauma to a body part, comprising:

a rigid shell defining a plurality of apertures therethrough;

a plurality of impact energy attenuation modules for attenuating the impact energy from an incoming impact force with impact duration within a time range of approximately 2 milliseconds to approximately 5 seconds arranged in a matrix and spaced apart in relation to one another; each of the plurality of impact energy attenuation modules including a mounting post; the impact energy attenuation modules being removably affixed to the rigid shell via engagement of the mounting posts to respective apertures through the rigid shell; and

wherein the impact energy attenuation modules each comprise:

a flexible bladder;

a plurality of particles within the bladder; at least one of the plurality of articles being in communication with an incoming impact force via the flexible bladder;

the at least one of the plurality of particles being in communication with other ones of the plurality of particles within the flexible bladder;

the incoming impact force being attenuated via the other ones of the plurality of particles within the flexible bladder.

2. The impact energy attenuation system of claim 1 , wherein the impact energy attenuation modules form a passive matrix.

3. The impact energy attenuation system of claim 1 , wherein the impact energy attenuation modules are interchangeably and removably connected to the rigid shell.

4. The impact energy attenuation system of claim 1 , wherein the impact energy attenuation modules are of at least two different sizes.

5. The impact energy attenuation system of claim 1 , wherein the modules are rotatably adjustable.

6. The impact energy attenuation system of claim 1 , wherein each of the modules reset to its original unloaded resting position and shape after an impact thereto within a time range of approximately 50 milliseconds to approximately 5 seconds in preparation for subsequent impact.

7. An impact energy attenuation system, comprising:

a rigid shell;

a plurality of impact energy attenuation modules arranged in a matrix and in spaced apart in relation to one another; the impact energy attenuation modules being removably affixed to the rigid shell;

wherein the impact energy attenuation modules each comprise:

a base having a receiving surface;

an intermediate member in the shape of a torus having a top and a bottom side and an aperture therethrough; the intermediate member being attached to the base with the bottom side in communication with the receiving surface of the base;

a flexible bladder having a free end and a connection end; the connected end being routed through the aperture in the intermediate member and connected to the base;

a plurality of particles within the bladder; at least one of the plurality of particles capable of being in communication with an incoming impact force via the flexible bladder;

whereby upon communication of the at least one of the plurality of particles with other ones of the plurality of particles within flexible bladder, the incoming impact force is attenuated by the bladder, intermediate member and base.
