Abstract

In one aspect, the invention is directed to polypeptides having an amylase activity, polynucleotides encoding the polypeptides, and methods for making and using these polynucleotides and polypeptides. In one aspect, the polypeptides of the invention can be used as amylases, for example, alpha amylases, to catalyze the hydrolysis of starch into sugars.

Claims (12)

1. A recombinant polypeptide comprising an amino acid fragment of the amino acid sequence as set forth in SEQ ID NO:2, wherein the amino acid fragment length is greater than 50 and less than 435 consecutive amino acid residues of the amino acid sequence as set forth in SEQ ID NO: 2.

2. The recombinant polypeptide of claim 1 , wherein the amino acid fragment length is greater than 75 and less than 435 consecutive amino acid residues of the amino acid sequence as set forth in SEQ ID NO: 2.

3. The recombinant polypeptide of claim 1 , wherein the amino acid fragment length is greater than 100 and less than 435 consecutive amino acid residues of the amino acid sequence as set forth in SEQ ID NO: 2.

4. The recombinant polypeptide of claim 1 , wherein the amino acid fragment length is greater than 150 and less than 435 consecutive amino acid residues of the amino acid sequence as set forth in SEQ ID NO: 2.

5. The recombinant polypeptide of claim 1 , wherein the amino acid fragment length is greater than 200 and less than 435 consecutive residues of the amino acid sequence as set forth in SEQ ID NO: 2.

6. The recombinant polypeptide of claim 1 , wherein the amino acid fragment length is greater than 250 and less than 435 consecutive residues of the amino acid sequence as set forth in SEQ ID NO: 2.

7. The recombinant polypeptide of claim 1 , wherein said polypeptide comprises 350 the amino acid fragment length is greater than 300 and less than 435 consecutive residues of the polypeptide of amino acid sequence as set forth in SEQ ID NO: 2.

8. The recombinant polypeptide of claim 1 , wherein said polypeptide comprises 350 the amino acid fragment length is greater than 350 and less than 435 consecutive residues of the polypeptide of amino acid sequence as set forth in SEQ ID NO: 2.

9. A hybrid polypeptide comprising the recombinant polypeptide of claim 1 , linked to a second polypeptide.

10. The hybrid polypeptide of claim 9 , wherein the second polypeptide is an alpha-amylase.

11. The hybrid polypeptide of claim 10 , wherein the alpha-amylase is a bacillus alpha-amylase.

12. A hybrid polypeptide comprising an enzymatically active amino acid fragment of the amino acid sequence as set forth in SEQ ID NO: 2, linked to an alpha amylase from Bacillus .
