Apparatus, systems and processes for reducing a hard disk drive's access time and concomitant power optimization
View Patent ↗Rotational latency is reduced in a standard conventional form factor HDD system by replacing, for example—the prior art rotary arm actuator of a conventional HDD, with one or more belts and pulleys and one or more read/write heads mounted on, or otherwise associated with the belts. Multiple scaled iterations facilitate energy savings and power optimized systems, without compromise to data access performance.
1. A data storage system comprising:
a read/write head mounted to a belt wherein the belt is configured to suspend the read/write over a data recording surface and to move the read/write head along the data recording surface.
2. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a slider, wherein the read/write head is coupled to the slider.
3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the slider is directly mounted to the belt so that the read/write head is mounted to the belt by the slider.
4. The system of claim 2 , further comprising a head gimbal assembly (HGA), the HGA comprising a flexure, the slider, and a load arm.
5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the HGA is directly mounted to the belt so that the read/write head is mounted to the belt by the HGA.
6. The system of claim 4 , wherein the HGA further comprises a base plate and the base plate is mounted to the belt by an angle bracket.
7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the belt is tensioned around a pulley and wherein rotation of the pulley moves the read/write head along the data recording surface.
8. The system of claim 7 , further comprising a chassis.
9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the pulley is rotatably mounted to the chassis and is rotated by action of a voice coil and the voice coil is controlled by a controller.
10. The system of claim 8 , wherein the chassis is configured to fit within a form factor of a conventional hard disk drive (HDD).
11. The system of claim 1 , comprising a plurality of data recording surfaces.
12. The system of claim 11 , comprising a belt-mounted read/write head for each of the plurality of data recording surfaces.
13. The system of claim 1 , comprising a plurality of read/write heads, mounted to the belt and configured to move along the data recording surface, wherein the plurality of read/write heads are configured to read from a data track simultaneously.
14. A mounting and moving system for read/write heads in a data storage device, the system comprising a hard disk drive (HDD), the HDD further comprising a belt, a pulley, and a read/write head mounted on the belt.
15. The mounting and moving system of claim 14 , further comprising a slider, wherein the read/write head is coupled to the slider.
16. The mounting and moving system of claim 15 , wherein the slider is directly mounted to the belt so that the read/write head is mounted to the belt by the slider.
17. The mounting and moving system of claim 15 , further comprising a head gimbal assembly (HGA), the HGA comprising a flexure, the slider, and a load arm.
18. The mounting and moving system of claim 17 , wherein the HGA is directly mounted to the belt so that the read/write head is mounted to the belt by the HGA.
19. The mounting and moving system of claim 17 , wherein the HGA further comprises a base plate and the base plate is mounted to the belt by an angle bracket.
20. The mounting and moving system of claim 14 , wherein the belt is tensioned around the pulley and wherein rotation of the pulley moves the belt mounted read/write head along a data recording surface.
21. A data storage system, comprising:
a head gimbal assembly mounted to a belt, the assembly comprising a read/write head, the belt configured to suspend the read/write head over a data recording surface and to move the read/write head across the data recording surface.
22. The system of claim 21 wherein the assembly further comprises a slider.
23. The system of claim 22 wherein the assembly further comprises a flexure and a load arm.
24. The system of claim 21 wherein the assembly further comprises a base plate, the base plate attached to the belt by one or more angle brackets.
25. The system of claim 21 wherein the belt is tensioned around a pulley and wherein rotation of the pulley moves the read/write head across the data recording surface.
26. The system of claim 25 further comprising a chassis, the pulley rotatably mounted to the chassis.
27. The system of claim 21 further comprising a plurality of the data recording surfaces.
28. A data storage device comprising a belt, a pulley, and a head gimbal assembly mounted to the belt.
29. The device of claim 28 wherein the assembly comprises a slider.
30. The device of claim 29 wherein the assembly further comprises a flexure and a load arm.
31. The device of claim 28 wherein the assembly comprises a base plate, the base plate attached to the belt by one or more angle brackets.
32. The device of claim 28 wherein the head gimbal assembly comprises a read/write head.
33. The device of claim 32 wherein the belt is tensioned around the pulley and wherein rotation of the pulley moves the read/write head across a data recording surface.
34. The device of claim 33 further comprising a chassis, the pulley rotatably mounted to the chassis.
