Abstract

A method and system for advanced alias domain routing are disclosed. According to one embodiment, a computer implemented method comprises receiving an incoming message from a first unified communications server, the incoming message comprising source address data, destination address data, and digital content. A real address of a destination address is computed by using the source address data, and an alias address of a source address is computed by using the destination address data. The incoming message is processed, wherein processing the incoming message includes enforcing policies. An outgoing message is generated comprising the digital content, the real address and the alias address. The outgoing message is transmitted to a second unified communications server.

Claims (43)

1. A computer-implemented method, comprising:

receiving from a first unified communications server an incoming message that is addressed to a recipient's alias and from a source address hosted on the first unified communications server;

determining a destination address hosted on a second unified communications server that is associated with the recipient's alias;

determining a sender's alias that is associated with the source address;

processing the incoming message by enforcing policies including a first policy that denies transmission of the incoming message based on an incoming message type, wherein the incoming message type is one of buddy invite, chat, presence, audio call, video call, and file transfer, and a second policy that denies transmission of the incoming message based on one or more of an address list, a domain list or a group list;

generating an outgoing message addressed to the destination address and from the sender's alias, wherein the outgoing message contains digital content from the incoming message; and

transmitting the outgoing message to the second unified communications server.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein determining a destination address comprises:

determining that the recipient's alias is associated with a routed domain;

retrieving a plurality of destination addresses associated with the recipient's alias; and

selecting the destination address from the plurality of destination addresses based on a relationship between the source address and the recipient's alias.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein determining a sender's alias comprises:

retrieving a plurality of aliases associated with the source address; and

selecting the sender's alias from the plurality of aliases based on a relationship between the source address and the destination address.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the digital content is one or more of a voice message, a video message, and an instant message.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the first unified communications server and second unified communications server are a single unified communications server.

6. A system, comprising:

a federation server in communication with a network and a database; and

software instructions executable by the federation server for causing the federation server to receive from a first unified communications server an incoming message that is addressed to a recipient's alias and from a source address hosted on the first unified communications server;

determine a destination address hosted on a second unified communications server that is associated with the recipient's alias; determine a sender's alias that is associated with the source address; process the incoming message based on enforced policies, wherein the enforced policies includes a first policy that denies transmission of the incoming message based on an incoming message type, wherein the incoming message type is one of buddy invite, chat, presence, audio call, video call, and file transfer, and a second policy that denies transmission of the incoming message based on one or more of an address list, a domain list or a group list; generate an outgoing message addressed to the destination address and from the sender's alias, wherein the outgoing message contains digital content from the incoming message; and transmit the outgoing message to the second unified communications server.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the software instructions for causing the federation server to determine a destination address further causes the federation server to:

determine that the recipient's alias is associated with a routed domain;

retrieve a plurality of destination addresses associated with the recipient's alias; and

select the destination address from the plurality of destination addresses based on a relationship between the source address and the recipient's alias.

8. The system of claim 6 , wherein the software instructions for causing the federation server to determine a sender's alias further causes the federation server to:

retrieve a plurality of aliases associated with the source address; and

select the sender's alias from the plurality of aliases based on a relationship between the source address and the destination address.

9. The system of claim 6 , wherein the digital content is one or more of a voice message, a video message, and an instant message.

10. A non-transitory computer-readable medium having stored thereon a plurality of instructions that, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to:

receive from a first unified communications server an incoming message that is addressed to a recipient's alias and from a source address hosted on the first unified communications server;

determine a destination address hosted on a second unified communications server that is associated with the recipient's alias;

determine a sender's alias that is associated with the source address;

process the incoming message based on enforced policies, wherein the enforced policies include a first policy that denies transmission of the incoming message based on an incoming message type, wherein the incoming message type is one of buddy invite, chat, presence, audio call, video call, and file transfer, and a second policy that denies transmission of the incoming message based on one or more of an address list, a domain list or a group list;

generate an outgoing message addressed to the destination address and from the sender's alias, wherein the outgoing message contains digital content from the incoming message; and

transmit the outgoing message to the second unified communications server.

11. The computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the plurality of instructions that cause the processor to determine the destination address further causes the processor to:

determine that the recipient's alias is associated with a routed domain;

retrieve a plurality of destination addresses associated with the recipient's alias; and

select the destination address from the plurality of destination addresses based on a relationship between the source address and the recipient's alias.

12. The computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the plurality of instructions that cause the processor to determine a sender's alias further causes the processor to:

retrieve a plurality of aliases associated with the source address; and

select the sender's alias from the plurality of aliases based on a relationship between the source address and the destination address.

13. The computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the digital content is one or more of a voice message, a video message, and an instant message.
