Abstract

An RF connector module and associated printed circuit board providing high isolation and controlled impedance at RF frequencies. The connector module may be manufactured using conventional manufacturing techniques, such as stamping, insert molding, multi-shot molding and interference fit between components, to provide low cost. A connector module constructed with these techniques may implement a co-planar waveguide structure, with conductive shields for isolation and lossy material to enforce co-planar propagation modes. The printed circuit board may similarly be manufactured using conventional manufacturing techniques, including drilling to form vias. As a result, an interconnection system may be manufactured with low cost. These techniques may be applied to provide performance, including in the form of isolation between RF signals, comparable to that provided by more expensive components.

Claims (54)

1. An electrical connector module, comprising:

a lead frame providing a coplanar waveguide structure, the lead frame comprising:

a plurality of signal conductors; and

a plurality of ground conductors adjacent to the signal conductors,

wherein:

the ground conductors are wider than the signal conductors; and

each of the plurality of signal conductors comprises a mating contact portion having a planar portion and a beam portion with a first contact surface on the planar portion and a second contact surface on the beam portion.

2. The electrical connector module of claim 1 , wherein:

the connector module further comprises an insulative portion; and

the mating contact portions extend from the insulative portion.

3. The electrical connector module of claim 1 , wherein:

the electrical connector module is a first electrical connector module;

the plurality of signal conductors is a first plurality of signal conductors;

the first electrical connector module is mated to a second electrical connector module;

the second electrical connector module comprises a second plurality of signal conductors; and

each of the second plurality of signal conductors comprises a mating contact portion having a planar portion and a beam portion with a first contact surface on the planar portion and a second contact surface on the beam portion.

4. The electrical connector module in the combination of claim 3 , wherein:

signal conductors of the second plurality of signal conductors are oriented to mate with signal conductors of the first plurality of signal conductors such that:

a planar portion of a signal conductor of the first plurality of signal conductors contacts a beam portion of a signal conductor of the second plurality of signal conductors; and

a beam portion of the signal conductor of the first plurality of signal conductors contacts a planar portion of the signal conductor of the second plurality of signal conductors.

5. The electrical connector module in the combination of claim 4 , wherein:

a first point of contact between the planar portion of the signal conductor of the first plurality of signal conductors and the beam portion of a signal conductor of the second plurality of signal conductors is a first distance from a tip of the signal conductor of the first plurality of signal conductors;

a second point of contact between the beam portion of the signal conductor of the first plurality of signal and the planar portion of the signal conductor of the second plurality of signal conductors is a second distance from the tip of the signal conductor of the first plurality of signal conductors; and

the first distance is different than the second distance.

6. The electrical connector module in the combination of claim 5 , wherein:

the difference between the first distance and the second distance improves connector performance by reducing a stub length.

7. An electrical connector module, comprising:

a lead frame comprising:

a plurality of first type conductors, each first type conductor having a contact tail, a mating contact portion and an intermediate portion, the intermediate portion of the first type conductors having widths less than a first width; and

a plurality of second type conductors, each of the second type conductors having a contact tail, a mating contact portion and an intermediate portion, the intermediate portions of the second type conductors having widths greater than the first width,

each first type conductor is disposed between and adjacent to two second type conductors.

11. The electrical connector module of claim 7 , further comprising:

a plurality of lossy regions, each lossy region coupled to a second type conductor.

12. The electrical connector module of claim 7 , wherein

the planar portion and the beam portion of the mating contact portions of the first type conductors are parallel, and

the planar portion and the beam portion of the mating contact portions of the first type conductors are connected at a proximal end and separated at a distal end.

13. The electrical connector module of claim 7 , wherein the planar portion and the beam portion of the mating contact portions of the first type conductors each comprises an edge and a broadside, and the planar portion and the beam portion are positioned edge-to-edge.

14. The electrical connector module of claim 7 , wherein:

the electrical connector module comprises a first connector;

the first connector is in combination with a second connector, the second connector comprising a plurality of the first type conductors; and

the plurality of first type conductors in the first connector and the plurality of first type conductors in the second connector are oriented such that, when the first connector and the second connector are mated:
