Abstract

The invention relates to compositions and methods of treatment employing compositions comprising polyelectrolyte complexes. The compositions include a water-soluble first polyelectrolyte bearing a net cationic charge or capable of developing a net cationic charge and a water-soluble second polyelectrolyte bearing a net anionic charge or capable of developing a net anionic charge. The total polyelectrolyte concentration of the first solution is at least 110 millimolar. The composition is free of coacervates, precipitates, latex particles, synthetic block copolymers, silicone copolymers, cross-linked poly(acrylic) and cross-linked water-soluble polyelectrolyte. The composition may be a concentrate, to be diluted prior to use to treat a surface.

Claims (17)

1. A dilutable composition comprising:

1) an oxidant selected from the group consisting of hypohalous acid, hypohalite and combinations thereof;

2) a polyelectrolyte complex precursor composition comprising:

(a) a water-soluble first polyelectrolyte bearing a net cationic charge or capable of developing a net cationic charge wherein said first polyelectrolyte is a homopolymer;

(b) about 0.001% to 0.19% by weight of a water-soluble second polyelectrolyte bearing a net anionic charge or capable of developing a net anionic charge wherein said second polyelectrolyte is selected from the group consisting of a homopolymer, a random copolymer, and mixtures thereof; and

(c) wherein the dilutable composition is free of precipitates, synthetic block copolymers, silicone copolymers, cross-linked poly(acrylic) and cross-linked water-soluble polyelectrolyte;

(d) wherein the composition has a viscosity of less than about 1,000 centipoise;

(e) wherein the water-soluble first polyelectrolyte bearing a net cationic charge or capable of developing a net cationic charge comprises poly(diallyldimethyl ammonium chloride) and the water-soluble second polyelectrolyte bearing a net anionic charge or capable of developing a net anionic charge comprises poly(vinyl) sulfate, and wherein an R value denoting a molar ratio of cationic or potentially cationic groups to that of anionic or potentially anionic groups of the first and second respective polyelectrolytes of the composition is greater than 1; and

3) wherein upon dilution, the composition forms a polyelectrolyte complex.

2. A concentrate composition comprising:

(a) about 0.001% to about 5.0% by weight of a water-soluble first polyelectrolyte bearing a net cationic charge or capable of developing a net cationic charge wherein said first polyelectrolyte is a poly(diallyldimethyl ammonium chloride) homopolymer;

(b) about 0.001% to 0.19% by weight of a water-soluble second polyelectrolyte bearing a net anionic charge or capable of developing a net anionic charge wherein said second polyelectrolyte is selected from the group consisting of poly(acrylic acid), a copolymer of acrylic acid and maleic acid, a copolymer of acrylic acid and styrene, a copolymer of styrene sulfonic acid and maleic acid, and mixtures thereof;

(c) a hypochlorite;

(d) wherein the composition is free of precipitates, synthetic block copolymers, silicone copolymers, cross-linked poly(acrylic) and cross-linked water-soluble polyelectrolyte;

(e) wherein the composition has a viscosity of less than about 1,000 centipoise; and

(f) wherein upon dilution, the concentrate composition forms a polyelectrolyte complex.

3. The composition of claim 2 , wherein an R value denoting a molar ratio of cationic or potentially cationic groups to that of anionic or potentially anionic groups of the first and second respective polyelectrolytes of the composition is greater than 1.
