Abstract

A supraglottic airway of the type used to facilitate lung ventilation and the insertion of endo-tracheal tubes or related medical instruments through a patient's laryngeal opening where the shield is designed to have an internal increase in pressure during assisted inhalation such as positive-pressure ventilation.

Claims (36)

1. A supraglottic airway comprising;

a respiratory tube having a distal end, a proximal end, and a length therebetween, said respiratory tube having a hollow interior; and

a shield comprising a posterior base and a sealing ring surrounding said posterior base, said sealing ring having an exterior side surface extending substantially around said posterior base and an upper surface extending from said exterior side surface toward a center of said posterior base, and an inner surface extending from the upper surface toward the center of said posterior base, the exterior surface, upper surface, and inner surface defining an inner volume within said sealing ring and a cavity above said posterior base, the upper surface and inner surface forming a recess within the cavity;

wherein said shield is attached to said distal end of said respiratory tube so that said hollow interior of said respiratory tube is in fluid communication with said cavity;

wherein said hollow interior and said cavity jointly define an air path; and

wherein said inner volume of said sealing ring is capable of fluid communication with said air path.

2. The airway of claim 1 wherein said respiratory tube is smoothly curved.

3. The airway of claim 1 wherein said shield is formed by blow-molding.

4. The airway of claim 1 wherein said shield formed by injection molding.

5. The airway of claim 1 wherein said air path is in fluid communication with said inner volume via a port.

6. The airway of claim 5 wherein said port comprises multiple holes.

7. The airway of claim 5 wherein said port comprises an elongated slit.

8. The airway of claim 5 wherein said port is located in a side of said sealing ring opening into said cavity.

9. The airway of claim 8 wherein said port comprises multiple holes.

10. The airway of claim 8 wherein said port comprises an elongated slit.

11. The airway of claim 10 wherein said elongated slit circumscribes said cavity.

12. A method of providing an artificial airway to a human comprising:

placing in the throat of a human, a supraglottic airway comprising;

a respiratory tube having a distal end, a proximal end, and a length therebetween, said respiratory tube defining a hollow interior; and

a shield comprising a posterior base and a sealing ring surrounding said posterior base, said sealing ring having an exterior side surface extending substantially around said posterior base, an upper surface extending from said exterior side surface toward a center of said posterior base, and an inner surface extending from said upper surface, together said exterior side surface, said upper surface, and said inner surface defining an inner volume within said sealing ring and a cavity above said posterior base, the upper surface and inner surface forming a recess within the cavity, wherein said shield is attached to said distal end of said respiratory tube and said cavity and said hollow interior jointly define an air path;

attaching said proximal end to a ventilation apparatus; and

forcing air into said air path to provide air to said patient;

wherein, the act of forcing air into said air path alters the pressure in said inner volume of said sealing ring.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein said alteration of pressure in said inner volume of said sealing ring comprises altering the size of said sealing ring as air is forced into said air path.

14. The method of claim 12 wherein said alteration of pressure in said inner volume of said sealing ring increases the strength of seal of said sealing ring to said throat.

15. The method of claim 12 wherein said alteration of pressure in said inner volume of said sealing ring increases the pressure said sealing ring imparts on said throat.

16. An artificial breathing system comprising:

a supraglottic airway including;

a respiratory tube having a distal end, a proximal end, and a length therebetween, said respiratory tube defining a hollow interior therethrough; and

a shield comprising a posterior base and a sealing ring surrounding said posterior base, said sealing ring having an exterior side surface extending substantially around said posterior base and an upper surface extending from said exterior side surface toward a center of said posterior base, and an inner surface extending from the upper surface toward the center of said posterior base, the exterior surface, upper surface, and inner surface defining an inner volume within said sealing ring and a cavity above said posterior base, the inner surface having a peripheral edge spaced from the posterior base and the upper surface within the cavity, wherein said shield is attached to said distal end of said respiratory tube and said cavity and said hollow interior jointly define an air path; and

a ventilation apparatus designed to increase pressure in said air path which is attached to said proximal end;

wherein, when said ventilation apparatus increases pressure in said air path it also alters the pressure in said inner volume in said sealing ring.

17. The system of claim 16 further comprising an elongated slit interconnecting said inner volume of said sealing ring to said cavity, said slit allowing said alteration in said of the sealing ring.

18. The system of claim 17 wherein said elongated slit circumscribes said cavity.

19. The system of claim 16 wherein said inner surface peripheral edge is radially inward of the upper surface.

20. The system of claim 16 wherein the inner surface extends from the upper surface at a transition that is radially outward of the inner surface peripheral edge.
