Abstract

A method of injecting fluid into a formation, comprises exerting a mechanical force on a wall of a bore extending through a formation to modify the permeability of the formation; and injecting fluid into the modified formation. The mechanical force may be exerted through inflation of at least one pressure deformable member mounted on a base member. The base member may be a base pipe. The pressure deformable member may be a hollow or tubular member mounted externally of the base pipe. A plurality of pressure deformable members are provided.

Claims (30)

1. A downhole apparatus comprising a base pipe, at least two pressure deformable chambers physically mounted externally on the base pipe, the at least two chambers configured for expansion to exert a force on a wall of a bore, and a bridging member bridging said at least two chambers and disposed to be positioned between said chambers and the bore wall and configured to exert a force on the bore wall between said at least two chambers.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said chambers are non-concentric with the base pipe.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the apparatus is configured such that there is at least one gap between outer portions of said expanded chambers and the bridging member extends across the at least one gap.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said bridging members comprise a plurality of axially extending bridging members that extend between the pressure deformable chambers, and wherein said pressure deformable chambers are axially extending.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said chambers and said bridging member are configured to permit fluid to pass radially therethrough.

6. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the bridging member is apertured.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a sand control element.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the bridging member serves as a drainage member and is located beneath the sand control element.

9. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the sand control element comprises a first edge and a second edge, the edges overlapping and whereby the sand control element is configurable in a smaller diameter configuration and a larger diameter configuration.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein a plurality of said bridging members are provided and are arranged such that the apparatus maintains a substantially cylindrical form as the chambers are expanded.

11. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein a plurality of said bridging members are provided and each said bridging member defines a segment of a cylinder.

12. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the at least two pressure deformable chambers are inflatable.

13. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the base pipe is non-expandable.

14. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the pressure deformable chambers are provided in multiple layers.

15. A method of exerting a force on a bore wall, comprising:

providing an apparatus comprising a base pipe, a plurality of inflatable chambers physically mounted externally on the base pipe, and a plurality of bridging members bridging the chambers;

locating the apparatus in a bore; and

inflating the chambers to exert a force on a wall of the bore, whereby the bridging members exert a force on the wall of the bore between the inflated chambers.

16. The method of claim 15 , comprising configuring the apparatus such that there is at least one gap between outer portions of the inflated chambers and at least one of the bridging members extends across the at least one gap.

17. The method of claim 15 , comprising wrapping a sand control element around the chambers and the bridging members.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the sand control element comprises a first edge and a second edge, the edges overlapping and whereby the sand control element is configurable in a smaller diameter configuration and a larger diameter configuration.

19. A downhole apparatus configured to be disposed in a well bore defined at least in part by a bore wall, the apparatus comprising

a base pipe adapted to be disposed in the well bore;

a plurality of hollow members physically mounted externally on the base pipe, said hollow members defining pressure-deformable chambers configured to exert a force on the bore wall by inflation of said chambers; and

a plurality of bridging members mounted on said chambers, said bridging members configured to bridge the chambers and to exert a force on the bore wall between the chambers.

20. The apparatus of claim 19 , wherein each bridging member extends over a space between adjacent chambers.

21. The apparatus of claim 19 , further comprising:

a sand screen around the plurality of hollow members, the sand screen having upper and lower ends wherein said hollow members extend from the upper end of the sand screen to the lower end of the sand screen;

a drainage layer formed between the sand screen and said plurality of hollow members; and

packing elements disposed around the base pipe at the upper and lower ends of the sand screen with said plurality of hollow members disposed between said packing members.
