Abstract

In various embodiments of the invention, a cargo container can be monitored at appropriate time intervals to determine that no controlled substances have been shipped with the cargo in the container. The monitoring utilizes reactive species produced from an atmospheric analyzer to ionize analyte molecules present in the container which are then analyzed by an appropriate spectroscopy system. In an embodiment of the invention, a sorbent surface can be used to absorb, adsorb or condense analyte molecules within the container whereafter the sorbent surface can be interrogated with the reactive species to generate analyte species characteristic of the contents of the container.

Claims (40)

1. An atmospheric ionization sorbent module (AISM) system to analyze a cargo comprising:

a container with a volume, where the container can be substantially confined on all sides, where the container includes at least a distal end and a proximal end;

the atmospheric ionization sorbent module (AISM) including a sorbent surface and a region in front of the sorbent surface, where the AISM is in connection with one or both the distal end and the proximal end; and

one or more fans to introduce ambient air to the region in front of the sorbent surface.

2. The system of claim 1 , where the one or more fans are adapted to re-circulate air through the volume.

3. The system of claim 1 , where the one or more fans one or both blow and suck air from one or more regions within the container across the sorbent surface.

4. The system of claim 1 , where one or more tubes located in the container connect the AISM to one or both the distal end and the proximal end.

5. The system of claim 4 , where the one or more fans are adapted to draw ambient air into the one or more tubes.

6. The system of claim 4 , further comprising a partition, where the partition separates the proximal end from the distal end, where the proximal end has a first atmosphere, where the distal end has a second atmosphere, where molecules in one or both the first atmosphere and the second atmosphere are transported through the one or more tubes to the AISM.

7. The system of claim 6 , where the one or more fans assist in transporting molecules in one or both the first atmosphere and the second atmosphere through the one or more tubes to the AISM.

8. The system of claim 7 , where one or more molecules travel through one or more tubes located in the container connecting one or both the first atmosphere and the second atmosphere to the region in front of the sorbent surface.

9. The system of claim 1 , where introducing ambient air to the region in front of the sorbent surface results in one or more molecules which one or more of absorb, adsorb and condense onto the sorbent surface.

10. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a heater to assist in desorption of molecules condensed on the sorbent surface prior to using an ionization source to ionize the molecules desorbed from the sorbent surface.

11. The system of claim 10 , where the heater raises the sorbent surface temperature above ambient temperature by between:

a lower limit of approximately ten degrees Celsius; and

an upper limit of approximately one hundred degrees Celsius.

12. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a condenser, where the condenser is positioned to cool the sorbent surface to collect molecules on the AISM prior to analysis.

13. The system of claim 12 , where the condenser lowers a temperature of the sorbent surface below ambient temperature by between:

a lower limit of approximately ten degrees Celsius; and

an upper limit of approximately one hundred degrees Celsius.

14. The system of claim 1 , further comprising an atmospheric ionizer and a spectrometer to analyze the AISM.

15. The system of claim 14 , where the spectrometer is selected from the group consisting of an ion mobility spectrometer, a mass spectrometer, an infrared spectrometer, a near-infrared spectrometer, a differential mobility spectrometer, a digital mass spectrometer and a chemical analyzer.

16. The system of claim 14 , where the AISM is adapted to receive a gas ion separator connected to the spectrometer, where the gas ion separator transports ions into the spectrometer.

17. A method of detecting substances in a container comprising:

(a) receiving the container, including one or more tubes and one or more fans, where the container can be substantially confined on all sides, where the container includes at least a distal end and a proximal end, where the distal end and the proximal end are connected by the one or more tubes;

(b) loading cargo into the container;

(c) attaching an atmospheric ionization sorbent module (AISM) to the container;

(d) circulating ambient air inside the container using the one or more fans;

(e) directing ambient air through the one or more tubes onto the AISM;

(f) monitoring the container with the AISM, an atmospheric ionizer and a spectrometer, by directing a plurality of ionizing species from the atmospheric ionizer at the AISM to form analyte species which enter the spectrometer; and

(g) detecting the analyte species with the spectrometer.

18. The method of claim 17 , further comprising using the one or more fans to one or both blow and suck air from within the container onto the AISM.

19. A method of detecting substances in a container comprising:

(a) receiving the container, including one or more fans, where the container can be substantially confined on all sides;

(b) loading cargo into the container;

(c) attaching an atmospheric ionization sorbent module (AISM) to the container;

(d) circulating ambient air inside the container using the one or more fans;

(e) monitoring the container with the AISM, an atmospheric ionizer and a spectrometer, by directing a plurality of ionizing species from the atmospheric ionizer at the AISM to form analyte species which enter the spectrometer; and

(g) detecting the analyte species with the spectrometer.

20. The method of claim 19 , where the container with the cargo is transported to a destination.
