Abstract

A method and an apparatus for processing display laminate, wherein the display laminate comprises a front electrode layer ( 106 ), a display material layer ( 104 ) and a protective film layer ( 102 ). The display laminate is continuous. A section of protective film layer ( 102 ) is continuously removed from the edge of the display laminate by a cutting unit ( 304 ) while the display laminate is running through the cutting unit ( 304 ). After removing the section of the protective film layer ( 102 ), a section of the display material layer ( 104 ) located at the same edge as the removed section of the protecting film layer ( 102 ) is continuously removed by spraying medium in a spraying unit ( 310 ) while the display laminate is running through the spraying unit ( 310 ).

Claims (29)

1. A method of processing a display laminate, wherein the display laminate comprises a front electrode layer, a display material layer and a protective film layer, which comprises following steps:

providing a continuous web of the display laminate,

continuously removing a section of the protective film layer from the edge of the display laminate web, and

after removing the section of the protective film layer,

continuously removing a section of the display material layer located at the same edge of the web as the removed section of the protective film layer.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the widths of the removed sections of the protective film layer, wherein the method of processing the display laminate is achieved without damaging the front electrode layer and the display material layer are equal.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the section of the display material layer is removed by introducing a spraying medium at least into the section of the display material layer located at the same edge of the web as the removed section of the protective film layer.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein after removing the section of the protective film layer and before removing the section of the display material layer, the section of the display material layer is continuously wetted by a wetting unit while the continuous display laminate is running through the wetting unit.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the display material is stored as a display element roll, and

before removing a section of protective film layer, the display element roll is unwound, and

after removing the section of the display material layer, the display element roll is rewound.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the spraying medium to be sprayed is a gas or liquid.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein a section of the protective film layer is removed by separating it from the display material layer so that a gap is created in the protective film layer and the display material layer and then, cutting the protective film layer.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein the spraying medium is applied by using a spray which is aligned so that it partially overlaps the protective film layer, preventing the spraying medium from entering a region below the protective film layer.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the display laminate is dried in a drying unit with pressurized air before rewinding the display material.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein a masking tape is attached to the protective film layer of the display laminate before rewinding the display material.

11. A continuous method for processing a display laminate containing an electrode layer, a display material layer and a protective film layer, into a functional display, which comprises:

providing an area for enabling electrical contact between the electrode layer and driving electronics by removing a section of the protective film layer and a section of the display material layer, and

attaching a conductive adhesive layer to the display laminate to establish electrical contact between the electrode layer and the driving electronics, wherein the method of processing the display laminate is achieved without damaging the electrode layer.

12. The continuous method of claim 11 , wherein

in a roll-to-roll method, the display laminate is unwound from a roll and introduced to a cutting unit,

a section of the protective film layer covering the display material layer is removed by turning the edge of the protective film layer to form a gap between the display material layer and the protective film layer, exposing the display material layer at the same edge as the removed part of the protective film layer,

winding the removed part of the protective film layer into a roll,

wetting the exposed section of the display material layer,

removing the wetted display material layer,

drying the remaining display laminate, and

introducing a conductive adhesive in the area where the display material has been removed.

13. The continuous method of claim 12 , wherein the display laminate has a thin, protective masking film provided at a front side of the display laminate, said masking film being removed from the display laminate and wound onto a roll.

14. The continuous method of claim 13 , wherein the processed display laminate is wound onto a receiving roll.
