Abstract

An information handling system cooling fan has a vibration filter that tunes out predetermined fan vibration frequencies to reduce fan vibration transfer from the cooling fan to an information handling system chassis in a targeted frequency range. For example, a leaf spring and damper are biased between the cooling fan and a fan bay support so that stiffness of the spring attenuates selected vibration frequency ranges of the cooling fan bay subsystem, such as frequency ranges where the vibrations have the greatest amplitude or frequency ranges where the vibrations tend to damage other components of the information handling system. In one embodiment, a vibration source generates out-of-phase vibrations that cancel cooling fan vibrations to further reduce overall system vibration output.

Claims (33)

1. An information handling system comprising: a chassis;

a processor disposed in the chassis and processing information; memory disposed in the chassis and in communication with the processor to store the information;

a cooling fan disposed in the chassis to generate a cooling air flow over the processor; a vibration detector disposed at the cooling fan to detect vibration of the cooling fan; and a vibration source integrated into the cooling fan and in communication with the vibration detector, the vibration source creating a vibration without creating a cooling airflow, the vibration canceling at least a portion of the cooling fan vibration detected by the vibration detector, the vibration source creating a vibration having an amplitude of less than a detected vibration of the cooling fan so that the resolution of the cooling fan vibration and the vibration source vibration provides a reduced adjusted vibration, the vibration source initiating vibration based upon a cooling fan motor position and direct current voltage, the generated vibration subsequently adjusted based upon detected vibration.

2. The information handling system of claim 1 wherein the vibration source creates a vibration at a predetermined frequency out of phase with the cooling fan vibration detected by the vibration detector at the predetermined frequency.

3. The information handling system of claim 2 wherein the vibration source creates a vibration at an amplitude substantially the same as the amplitude of the cooling fan vibration detected by the vibration detector at the predetermined frequency.

4. The information handling system of claim 1 wherein the vibration source comprises a solenoid coupled to the cooling fan.

5. The information handling system of claim 1 wherein the vibration source comprises an off center rotating weight disposed in the cooling fan.

6. The information handling system of claim 1 further comprising a cooling fan bay coupled to the chassis and configured to accept one or more cooling fans, wherein the vibration source is disposed between the cooling fan and the cooling fan bay.

7. The information handling system of claim 1 wherein the vibration detector comprises an accelerometer that detects accelerations associated with the cooling fan vibration.

8. The information handling system of claim 1 further comprising a fan controller that controls the cooling fan speed and the vibration source, wherein the fan controller, the vibration detector and the vibration source form a closed loop control to generate vibrations with the vibration source at a phase and amplitude that cancels cooling fan vibrations in a predetermined frequency range.

9. The information handling system of claim 8 wherein the predetermined frequency range comprises a frequency range associated with damage to a component disposed in the chassis.

10. A method for managing vibration of an information handling system cooling fan, the method comprising:

powering the cooling fan in an information handling system chassis to generate a cooling airflow over one or more components, the cooling fan supported in a cooling fan housing, the cooling fan housing disposed within the information handling system chassis;

detecting vibration associated with the cooling fan at a predetermined frequency; and

11. The method of claim 10 wherein detecting vibration further comprises detecting vibration with an accelerometer coupled to the cooling fan.

12. The method of claim 10 wherein generating vibration further comprises applying power to an off center rotating weight coupled to the cooling fan.

13. The method of claim 10 wherein generating vibration further comprises applying power to a solenoid.

14. The method of claim 10 wherein:

detecting vibration further comprises detecting a phase of the vibration at the predetermined frequency; and

generating vibration further comprises generating vibration at the predetermined frequency substantially 180 degrees out of the detected phase.

15. The method of claim 10 wherein:

detecting vibration further comprises detecting an amplitude of the vibration at the predetermined frequency; and

generating vibration further comprises generating vibration at the predetermined frequency with the detected amplitude.

16. The method of claim 15 wherein the predetermined frequency comprises a range of frequencies associated with damage to a hard disk drive disposed in the information handling system.

17. A cooling fan comprising:

a housing;

a fan disposed in the housing, the fan having a motor to turn a blade that creates a cooling airflow;

a vibration source disposed in the housing to generate vibrations without creating cooling airflow;

a vibration detector disposed in the housing to detect vibrations associated with the fan; and

a fan controller interfaced with the fan, the vibration source and the vibration detector, the fan controller controlling the motor and the vibration source, the fan controller generating vibrations with the vibration source to cancel vibrations generated by the fan as detected by the vibration detector, the fan controller setting a vibration source vibration phase based at least in part on the phase of an alternating current phase used to power the fan.

18. The cooling fan of claim 17 wherein the vibration detector comprises an accelerometer.

19. The cooling fan of claim 17 wherein the fan controller generates vibrations out of phase with vibrations generated by the fan in a predetermined frequency range.
