Abstract

Embodiments of a method and a system are provided to create a uniform layer of a substance such as a hydrogel or other fluid substance underneath the soil surface with minimal or little surface disturbance to the plants, the plant roots and the soil located on or slightly below the applied surface area. It is to be clearly understood that various different embodiments may be employed to deliver a variety of different substances to the soil, and such substances may be gels or liquids. The presently preferred fluid substance is currently a hydrogel, and the present illustrated and described embodiment may be employed to inject hydrogel into soil but other fluid substances may be injected as well.

Claims (41)

1. A system for injecting a hydrogel into soil, comprising:

a tank configured to deliver the hydrogel;

at least one injector probe having a central axis and having an inlet for receiving the hydrogel and at least one outlet for dispersing the hydrogel at a pressure in a layer at a target depth beneath and substantially parallel to the surface of the soil;

a driver configured to drive and retract the at least one injector probe into and out of the soil to and from the target depth of the soil;

a rotator mechanism configured to rotate the at least one injector probe about the central axis to a different angular position at the target depth to disperse the hydrogel at the different angular position to fill in gaps in the layer; and

a rotator piston cylinder assembly for advancing angularly the rotator mechanism;

wherein the driver drives the at least one injector probe into the soil to the target depth, the at least one injector probe injects a first quantity of hydrogel in the layer the soil at the target depth, the rotator mechanism rotates the at least one injector probe about the central axis to the different angular position at the target depth, the at least one injector probe injects a second quantity of hydrogel in the layer at the target depth to fill in gaps in the layer, and the driver retracts the at least one injector probe from the soil.

2. The system of claim 1 , further including a vibrator coupled to the driver to assist the driving of the at least one injector probe into the soil.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the tank further includes a pump for pressurizing the hydrogel.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one outlet includes at least one nozzle configured to disperse the hydrogel under the pressure in a direction substantially parallel to a plane of the soil.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the driver comprises a driver piston cylinder assembly.

6. The system of claim 1 , further including a bell crank connected to the rotator piston cylinder assembly for advancing angularly the rotator mechanism.

7. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a probe frame assembly including the at least one injector probe.

8. The system of claim 7 , further including a carriage mounted on a set of wheels to support the probe frame assembly rollably along the surface of the soil.

9. The system of claim 7 , wherein the probe frame assembly is foldable.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one injector probe disperses the hydrogel under the pressure a radial distance from the at least one outlet of between about 2 inches and about 6 inches.

11. The system of claim 1 , further including a depth adjustment for adjusting the depth of the at least one injector probe.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the pressure is between about 2000 psi and about 3000 psi.

13. The system of claim 1 , wherein the hydrogel comprises polyacrylamide, starch or polyacrylate.

14. A method for injecting a hydrogel into soil, comprising:

driving at least one injector probe having at least one outlet into the soil to a target depth beneath the surface of the soil;

dispersing a first quantity of the hydrogel at a pressure out of the at least one outlet in a layer at the target depth beneath and substantially parallel to the surface of the soil;

rotating the at least one injector probe about a central axis to a different angular position;

dispersing a second quantity of the hydrogel under the pressure out of the at least one outlet in a layer at the target depth beneath and substantially parallel to the surface of the soil; and

retracting the at least one injector probe out of the soil.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising vibrating the injector probe during the driving.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein the dispersing comprises feeding the hydrogel into an inlet of the at least one injector probe under the pressure.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the feeding includes pumping the hydrogel from a pressurized tank.

18. The method of claim 14 , wherein the target depth is between about 4 and about 6 inches beneath the surface of the soil.

19. The method of claim 14 , wherein the hydrogel is dispersed in a circular spray pattern of a diameter.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the diameter of the dispersed hydrogel is between about 4 inches and about 12 inches.

21. The method of claim 19 , further comprising after dispersing the hydrogel and retracting the at least one injector probe, moving the injector probe along the surface of the soil a distance equal to about the diameter.

22. The method of claim 21 , wherein the at least one injector probe is moved by a carriage while the at least one outlet of the at least one injector probe is retracted above the surface of the soil.

23. The method of claim 14 , further comprising a jack coupled to the at least one injector probe for adjusting the depth of the at least one injector probe.

24. The method of claim 14 , wherein the hydrogel comprises polyacrylamide, starch or polyacrylate.

25. A method for injecting a hydrogel into soil, comprising

driving at least one injector probe having a plurality of outlets into the soil to a target depth;

dispersing a quantity of the hydrogel under a pressure from the at least one injector probe into a layer at the target depth beneath and substantially parallel to the surface of the soil in a generally circular spray pattern having a diameter;
