Abstract

A mechanical actuator for translating rotational motion to linear motion. The actuator includes a motor, a screw assembly, a bearing assembly, and first and second lubrication systems. The screw assembly includes a housing, a threaded screw shaft disposed within the housing, a nut assembly, and an extension tube. The threaded screw shaft is rotatable by the motor. The nut assembly is arranged to move in either direction along a longitudinal axis of the threaded screw shaft when the threaded screw shaft is in rotational motion, thereby moving the extension tube between an extended position and a retracted position. The bearing assembly is arranged to provide support to at least a portion of a length of the threaded screw shaft. A pathway of the first lubrication system is remote and isolated from a pathway of the second lubrication system.

Claims (32)

1. A mechanical actuator comprising:

a motor;

a screw assembly comprising a threaded screw shaft, a nut assembly, and an extension tube, the threaded screw shaft rotatable by the motor and the nut assembly arranged to move in either direction along a longitudinal axis of the threaded screw shaft when the threaded screw shaft is in rotational motion, thereby moving the extension tube between an extended position and a retracted position; and

a lubrication system comprising a lubrication impeller, the system arranged to provide lubrication to the screw assembly;

wherein the lubrication system includes a pressurized oil bath using an accumulator.

2. The mechanical actuator of claim 1 wherein the accumulator is a spring piston accumulator.

3. The mechanical actuator of claim 1 wherein the accumulator maintains a positive charge when the extension tube is in the retracted position.

4. The mechanical actuator of claim 1 wherein the accumulator and a volume of oil in the bath are sized to generate a predetermined output force.

5. The mechanical actuator of claim 4 wherein the predetermined output force counterbalances a predetermined application load.

6. The mechanical actuator of claim 4 wherein the predetermined output force reduces a horsepower requirement for a selected application.

7. The mechanical actuator of claim 1 wherein the lubrication impeller operates concurrently with internal circulation and external circulation.

8. The mechanical actuator of claim 1 wherein the lubricant impeller is rotatable at a speed which is between 50percent and 75 percent of the threaded screw speed.

9. The mechanical actuator of claim 1 wherein the lubrication system is operable to return the extension tube to a home-position when electrical power is interrupted to the actuator.

10. The mechanical actuator of claim 1 wherein the threaded screw shaft is a roller screw.

11. A mechanical actuator comprising:

a motor;

a screw assembly comprising a threaded screw shaft, a nut assembly, and an extension tube, the threaded screw shaft rotatable by the motor and the nut assembly arranged to move in either direction along a longitudinal axis of the threaded screw shaft when the threaded screw shaft is in rotational motion, thereby moving the extension tube between an extended position and a retracted position; and

a lubrication system comprising a lubrication impeller, the system arranged to provide lubrication to the screw assembly;

wherein the lubrication system includes a pressurized oil bath system using an accumulator, external tubing, and external valves.

12. The mechanical actuator of claim 11 wherein the extension tube is hydraulically or pneumatically lockable in a desired position by closing the external valves.

13. The mechanical actuator of claim 11 wherein the accumulator is a spring based piston.

14. The mechanical actuator of claim 11 wherein the threaded screw shaft is a roller screw.

15. A mechanical actuator comprising:

a motor;

a screw assembly comprising a housing, a threaded screw shaft disposed within the housing, a nut assembly, and an extension tube, the threaded screw shaft rotatable by the motor and the nut assembly arranged to move in either direction along a longitudinal axis of the threaded screw shaft when the threaded screw shaft is in rotational motion, thereby moving the extension tube between an extended position and a retracted position;

a bearing assembly arranged to provide support to at least a portion of the threaded screw shaft; and

a lubrication system comprising a lubrication impeller, the system arranged to provide lubrication to the screw assembly.

16. The mechanical actuator of claim 15 wherein the lubrication system includes one of grease and oil as lubrication fuild.

17. The mechanical actuator of claim 16 wherein the lubrication system includes air present in the actuator with the lubrication fluid.

18. The mechanical actuator of claim 16 wherein the lubrication system includes a heat exchanger to increase the surface area exposed to the environment to increase lubricant cooling by the environment.

19. The mechanical actuator of claim 16 wherein the lubrication system includes (a) air present in the actuator with the lubrication fluid and (b) a heat exchanger to increase the surface area exposed to the environment to increase lubricant cooling by the environment.

20. The mechanical actuator of claim 16 wherein the lubrication system includes an overflow container to hold lubricant and to act as an accumulator to store energy to drive a load.
