Abstract

A process for manufacturing multi-ply disintegratable absorbent sheets is provided. Each said sheet includes at least five plies including two exterior plies and at least three interior plies. Each of at least three of the plies in the sheet is in at least one group of plies and each of the at least three plies is joined to another ply by mechanical deformation.

Claims (12)

1. A process for manufacturing multi-ply water-disintegratable absorbent sheets, each said sheet comprising a plurality of plies, a mean thickness of a ply of the sheet being greater than 0.115 mm, a basis weight of said sheet being greater than 0.070 kg/m 2 , and a total product thickness exceeds 0.75 mm, the process comprising the steps of:

embossing a first ply with a first embossing zone having a first embossing cylinder to create a first embossed ply, the first embossed ply being embossed with a decorative pattern;

embossing a second ply with a second embossing zone having a second embossing cylinder to create a second embossed ply, the second embossed ply being coarsely micro-embossed having approximately 25 protrusions per cm 2 for increased stiffness;

embossing a third ply with a third embossing zone having a third embossing cylinder to create a third embossed ply, the third embossed ply being microembossed having at least 30 protrusions per cm 2 ;

applying an adhesive to a first surface of the second embossed ply using an adhesive coating unit, the adhesive being applied to the first surface of the second embossed ply when a second surface of the second embossed ply that is opposed to the first surface is pressed against the first embossed ply such that the adhesive passes from the first surface of the second embossed ply to reach the second surface of the second embossed ply and a surface of the first embossed ply; and

associating the assembled first and second embossed plies with the third embossed ply by using a marrying cylinder that pressures the first surface of the second ply against the third ply on the first embossing cylinder with a pressure in a range of 3 kg/mm 2 to 16 kg/mm 2 ,

wherein at least one of the first ply, the second ply, or the third ply includes two or more plies so that a total number of plies is between 5 to 9 plies, and the multi-ply absorbent sheets have a flexibility between 1.5 N and 3.1 N.

2. The process of claim 1 , wherein in said step of associating the first and the second ply, the adhesive coating unit includes an adhesive application cylinder that applies a pressure on the first embossing cylinder.

3. The process of claim 1 , wherein the adhesive coating unit includes an adhesive application cylinder that has an engraved surface to selectively apply adhesive via tops of the engraved surface.

4. The process of claim 1 , wherein the pressure between the marrying cylinder and the first embossing cylinder is in a range of about 10 kg/mm 2 to about 11 kg/mm 2 .

5. The process of claim 1 , wherein the marrying cylinder is less hard than the first embossing cylinder.

6. The process of claim 1 , wherein in the step of embossing the second ply, the second embossing cylinder pressures the second ply against a smooth cylinder, the second embossing cylinder and the smooth cylinder arranged separately from the first and the third embossing cylinder.
