Abstract

A forceps is provided. The forceps includes a housing having a shaft that extends therefrom. The bipolar forceps also includes a hydraulic mechanism that includes a fluid line and a plunger operatively coupled to the fluid line. The plunger is translatable within at least a portion of the shaft from a proximal position to a distal position. An end effector assembly is operatively connected to a distal end of the shaft and includes a pair of first and second jaw members biased in an open configuration. Each of the first and second jaw members configured to receive at least a portion of the plunger when a fluid is caused to flow within the fluid line such that the first and second jaw members move from an open position for positioning to a closed position for grasping tissue.

Claims (32)

1. A forceps comprising:

a housing;

a shaft extending distally from the housing and defining a longitudinal axis;

a first plunger disposed within the shaft;

a hydraulic mechanism operatively associated with the first plunger and configured to translate the first plunger along the longitudinal axis; and

an end effector assembly positioned at a distal end of the shaft and including first and second jaw members moveable relative to one another between an open configuration and a clamped configuration, each of the jaw members defining an aperture configured to receive a portion of the first plunger when the first plunger is translated distally to move the first and second jaw members towards the clamped configuration.

2. The forceps according to claim 1 , further comprising a second plunger operatively associated with the hydraulic mechanism, the hydraulic mechanism configured to translate the second plunger along the longitudinal axis.

3. The forceps according to claim 2 , wherein the second plunger is configured to selectively engage at least one of the first and second jaw members to sever tissue clamped between the first and second jaw members when the first and second jaw members are in the clamped configuration.

4. The forceps according to claim 2 , wherein the second plunger includes a knife blade coupled thereto that is translatable through a knife slot defined within at least one of the first and second jaw members.

5. The forceps according to claim 2 , wherein the second plunger is translatable relative to the first plunger.

6. The forceps according to claim 2 , wherein the second plunger is translatable independent of the first plunger.

7. The forceps according to claim 1 , wherein the first and second jaw members are biased towards the open configuration.

8. The forceps according to claim 1 , wherein each of the first and second jaw members is pivotable about a pivot pin located at the distal end of the shaft.

9. The forceps according to claim 1 , wherein the first plunger includes two prongs extending from a proximal end thereof, one of the two prongs engaging the aperture of the first jaw member and the other of the two prongs engaging the aperture of the second jaw member when the first plunger is translated distally.

10. The forceps according to claim 1 , further comprising a biasing member operably disposed on the first plunger and configured to bias the first plunger proximally.

11. A forceps comprising:

a housing;

a shaft extending distally from the housing and defining a longitudinal axis;

a plunger assembly disposed within the shaft and including first and second plungers;

an end effector assembly positioned at a distal end of the shaft and including first and second jaw members moveable relative to one another between an open configuration and a clamped configuration; and

a hydraulic mechanism operatively associated with the first and second plungers and configured to translate the first and second plungers along the longitudinal axis, the first plunger configured to engage the first and second jaw members to move the first and second jaw members toward the clamped configuration when the first plunger is translated distally along the longitudinal axis, the second plunger operatively associated with a knife and configured to translate the knife along the longitudinal axis, wherein each of the first and second jaw members defines aperture and the first plunger is configured to selectively engage the aperture of each of the first and second jaw members when the first plunger is translated distally to move the first and second jaw members towards the clamped configuration.

12. The forceps according to claim 11 , wherein the second plunger is translatable relative to the first plunger.

13. The forceps according to claim 11 , wherein at least one of the first and second jaw members define a knife channel and the second plunger is configured to translate the knife through the knife channel as the second plunger is translated distally.

14. The forceps according to claim 11 , wherein the first and second jaw members are biased towards the open configuration.

15. A method for performing an electrosurgical procedure, the method comprising:

positioning tissue between first and second jaw members of an electrosurgical instrument;

actuating a hydraulic mechanism of the electrosurgical instrument to move the first and second jaw members towards each other such that tissue is grasped therebetween, wherein actuating the hydraulic mechanism includes engaging an aperture defined in at least one of the first and second jaw members with a first plunger of the hydraulic mechanism;

applying electrosurgical energy to the jaw members to electrosurgically treat the grasped tissue; and

reactuating the hydraulic mechanism to sever the treated tissue.

16. The method according to claim 15 , wherein the first and second jaw members are biased towards an open configuration.

17. The method according to claim 15 , wherein reactuating the hydraulic mechanism to sever the treated tissue includes translating a second plunger of the hydraulic mechanism distally.

18. The method according to claim 17 , wherein translating the second plunger of the hydraulic mechanism distally includes translating the second plunger relative to the first plunger.
