Abstract

An endoscopic bipolar forceps includes a housing and a shaft, the shaft having an end effector assembly at a distal end thereof, which includes two jaw members for grasping tissue therebetween. Each jaw member is adapted to connect to an electrosurgical energy source, enabling them to affect a tissue seal to tissue held therebetween. A drive assembly is included within the housing for moving the jaw members. A movable handle is also included, such that movement of the handle actuates the drive assembly to move the jaw members relative to each other. A knife channel is included within the end effector configured to allow reciprocation of a knife blade within the knife channel. The knife blade includes a proximal edge adapted to engage a proximal edge of the end effector to impede translation of the knife blade when the jaw members are in an open configuration and the knife blade is retracted within the end effector assembly.

Claims (14)

1. A bipolar forceps, comprising:

a housing;

a shaft extending from the housing;

an end effector assembly disposed at a distal end portion of the shaft, the end effector assembly including movable and fixed jaw members, the movable jaw member including a flange portion pivotably coupled to the fixed jaw member about a pivot pin such that the movable jaw member is pivotable relative to the fixed jaw member about the pivot pin from a first position, wherein the jaw members are disposed in spaced relation relative to one another to at least a second position, wherein the jaw members are closer to one another;

a knife channel defined through at least one of the first or second jaw members; and

a knife including a shaft portion defining a first height, a knife blade portion defining a second height and slidable through the knife channel, and a notched portion disposed between the shaft portion and the knife blade portion and defining a third height less than the first and second heights, wherein the flange portion of the movable jaw member is disposed at least partially within the notched portion of the knife when the jaw members are disposed in the first position to inhibit movement of the knife in proximal and distal directions relative to the fixed jaw member.

The bipolar forceps according to claim 1 , wherein each of the movable and fixed jaw members includes an electrically-conductive sealing surface adapted to connect to an electrosurgical energy source such that the electrically-conductive sealing surfaces are capable of conducting energy through tissue grasped between the movable and fixed jaw members to effect a tissue seal.

3. The bipolar forceps according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of the movable or fixed jaw members includes a texturized surface for facilitating grasping and retaining tissue.

4. The bipolar forceps according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of the movable or fixed jaw members is insulated.

5. The bipolar forceps according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of the movable or fixed jaw members includes a stop member adapted to create a gap between the movable and fixed jaw members when the movable and fixed jaw members are disposed in the second position.

6. The bipolar forceps according to claim 1 , wherein the knife is a solid blade of unitary construction.

7. The bipolar forceps according to claim 1 , wherein the knife channel is defined within the movable jaw member.

8. The bipolar forceps according to claim 1 , wherein an angle is defined by a distal edge of the knife blade and a perpendicular line to a surface to be cut and is selected from the group consisting of positive, negative, and neutral angles.

9. The bipolar forceps according to claim 1 , wherein, with the jaw members in the second position, the knife blade is permitted to slide through the knife channel in the distal direction.
