Abstract

In a method for collaborating, a first computing device determines capabilities needed for an application to function. The first computing device enables one or more other computing devices to connect to the application. The first computing device determines capabilities of a second computing device, wherein the second computing device is connected to the application. The first computing device determines the capabilities needed for the application to function are met. The first computing device configures a user interface of the second device.

1. A method of collaborating comprising the steps of:

a first computing device determining capabilities needed for a colony application to function, wherein the colony application is a collaborative computing program using a plurality of computing devices, and wherein the capabilities needed for a colony application to function are based, at least in part, on a template of suggested capabilities;

the first computing device enabling one or more other computing devices to connect to the colony application via a proximity detection function;

the first computing device receiving an indication that the one or more other computing devices has joined the colony application;

the first computing device determining capabilities of at least one computing device of the one or more other computing devices, wherein the at least one computing device is connected to the colony application and wherein determining capabilities includes the first computing device collecting data from a sensor with an available callable application programming interface from the at least one computing device;

the first computing device determining capabilities of at least one user of the one or more other computing device, wherein the at least one user operates the at least one computing device and wherein determining capabilities includes the first computing device identifying the at least one user;

the first computing device determining an environment of each computing device of the at least one computing device, wherein the environment of each computing device includes a context that is a representation of the physical world around the at least one computing device;

the first computing device determining that the capabilities of the at least one computing device and capabilities of the first computing device together meet the capabilities needed for the colony application to function;

the first computing device determining that the capabilities of a second computing device of the at least one computing device and capabilities of the first computing device together do not meet the capabilities needed for the colony application to function;

the first computing device using a first capability of the first computing device instead of the first capability of the second computing device;

the first computing device displaying on the second computing device the capabilities needed for the colony application to function; and

the first computing device configuring a user interface of each computing device of the one or more computing devices based on the capabilities of that corresponding computing device and the environment of that corresponding computing device, wherein configuring the user interface of each computing device of the one or more computing devices includes associating the user interface of each computing device of the one or more computing devices with one or more of the capabilities.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the capabilities needed for the colony application to function comprise device capabilities.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the capabilities needed for the colony application to function comprise user capabilities.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the environment is a location.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the environment is a context.

6. A computer program product for collaborating, the computer program product comprising:

one or more computer-readable storage devices and program instructions stored on at least one of the one or more storage devices, the program instructions comprising:

program instructions to determine capabilities needed for a colony application to function, wherein the colony application is a collaborative computing program using a plurality of computing devices, and wherein the capabilities needed for a colony application to function are based, at least in part, on a template of suggested capabilities;

program instructions to enable one or more other computing devices to connect to the colony application via a proximity detection function;

program instructions to receive an indication that the one or more other computing devices has joined the colony application;

program instructions to determine capabilities of at least one computing device of the one or more other computing devices, wherein the at least one computing device is connected to the colony application and wherein determining capabilities includes a first computing device collecting data from a sensor with an available callable application programming interface from the at least one computing device;

program instructions to determine capabilities of at least one user of the one or more other computing device, wherein the at least one user operates the at least one computing device and wherein determining capabilities includes the first computing device identifying the at least one user;

program instructions to determine an environment of each computing device of the at least one computing device, wherein the environment of each computing device includes a context that is a representation of the physical world around the at least one computing device;

program instructions to determine that the capabilities of the at least one computing device and capabilities of the first computing device together meet the capabilities needed for the colony application to function are met;

program instructions to determine that the capabilities of a second computing device of the at least one computing device and capabilities of the first computing device together do not meet the capabilities needed for the colony application to function;

program instructions to use a first capability of the first computing device instead of the first capability of the second computing device;

program instructions to display on the second computing device the capabilities needed for the colony application to function; and

program instructions to configure a user interface of each computing device of the one or more other computing devices based on the capabilities of that corresponding computing device and the environment of that corresponding computing device, wherein configuring the user interface of each computing device of the one or more computing devices includes associating the user interface of each computing device of the one or more computing devices with one or more of the capabilities.
