Abstract

Certain aspects involve distributing power in a distributed antenna system. A subsystem of the distributed antenna system can receive key performance indicators for remote units and system factors that affect the key performance indicators. The subsystem can determine a radio frequency power to achieve key performance indicators based on the one or more system factors and configure the remote units to operate at the radio frequency power.

Claims (47)

1. A method comprising:

receiving one or more key performance indicators representing a desired level of performance of at least one remote unit in a distributed antenna system comprising a plurality of remote units;

receiving one or more system factors representing measurements of the distributed antenna system that affect performance of the plurality of remote units at the desired level based on a configuration of the distributed antenna system, wherein receiving the one or more system factors includes receiving a number of channels for at least one carrier frequency modulation in the distributed antenna system;

determining a radio frequency power for the at least one remote unit to achieve the one or more key performance indicators based, at least in part, on the one or more system factors; and

configuring the at least one remote unit to operate at the radio frequency power.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising storing at least one of the one or more key performance indications, the one or more system factors in a database, or the radio frequency power in a database.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the one or more key performance indicators or the one or more system factors is received from a database for determining the radio frequency power.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining the one or more system factors to generate one or more determined factors, wherein receiving the one or more system factors includes receiving the one or more determined factors; and

storing the one or more determined factors in a database.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the distributed antenna system includes one or more frequency bands that share an amplifier.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving the one or more system factors includes determining a path loss for at least one carrier frequency modulation in the distributed antenna system.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving the one or more system factors includes receiving an antenna gain for at least one carrier frequency modulation in the distributed antenna system.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein receiving the one or more system factors includes receiving a reference power based on characteristics of a carrier signal associated with the one or more key performance indicators, wherein the determining the radio frequency power is based, at least in part, on the reference power.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the radio frequency power is a function of a frequency associated with a carrier signal for the radio frequency power.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the one or more key performance indicators is representative of the signal strength of the at least one remote unit.

11. A distributed antenna system, comprising:

a power allocation subsystem in a head-end unit of the distributed antenna system, the distributed antenna system comprising a plurality of remote units, the power allocation subsystem receiving one or more key performance indicators and one or more system factors,

the one or more key performance indicators being representative of a desired level of performance of at least one remote unit in the distributed antenna system, and

the one or more system factors being representative of measurements of the distributed antenna system that affect performance of the plurality of remote units at the desired level based on a configuration of the distributed antenna system;

the power allocation subsystem including a power allocation module that is executable by a processing device for:

receiving the one or more key performance indicators,

receiving the one or more system factors, wherein receiving the one or more system factors includes determining a path loss for at least one carrier frequency modulation for the at least one remote unit;

determining a radio frequency power for the at least one remote unit to achieve the one or more key performance indicators based, at least in part, on the one or more system factors, and

13. The distributed antenna system of claim 11 further comprising one or more frequency bands that share an amplifier.

14. The distributed antenna system of claim 11 , wherein the power allocation module is further executable by the processing device for determining at least one of the one or more system factors.

15. The distributed antenna system of claim 11 , wherein at least one of the one or more key performance indicators is representative of the signal strength of the at least one remote unit.

16. The distributed antenna system of claim 11 , wherein the power allocation module is executable by the processing device for receiving at least one of the one or more key performance indicators from a database,

wherein the one or more key performance indicators is specified by a telecommunications provider using the distributed antenna system.

17. The distributed antenna system of claim 11 , wherein the power allocation module is further executable by the processing device for:

receiving a reference power based on characteristics of a carrier signal associated with the one or more key performance indicators; and
