Abstract

An interactive television program guide system is provided in which the program guide may provide the user with a selectable list of combination categories. Combination categories are composed of multiple simple categories such as sports, news, comedy, movies, children, etc. Program listings are supplied to the program guide. At least some of the program listings are associated with combination categories. A combination category build process may be used to assign combination categories to program listings. The user is able to use the selectable categories list to quickly identify programming of interest.

Claims (50)

1. A method for providing media asset categories, the method comprising:

storing a list of a plurality of media asset categories;

storing status information for a first media asset category of the plurality of media asset categories;

receiving an indication to delete the first media asset category from a display of the stored list of the plurality of media asset categories or an indication to restore the first media asset category;

based on the received indication, searching the stored list of the plurality of media asset categories to identify the first media asset category of the plurality of media asset categories;

updating the stored status information for the identified first media asset category with the received indication; and

processing the stored list of the plurality of media asset categories to generate a display of the stored list of the plurality of media asset categories based on the stored status information, wherein the generated display identifies each of the plurality of media asset categories in the generated display, wherein the processing to generate the display comprises excluding, from the generated display, the first media asset category if the first media asset category has the indication to delete in the stored status information, and wherein the processing to generate the display comprises including, on the generated display, the first media asset category if the media asset category has the indication to restore in the stored status information.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the plurality of media asset categories comprises at least one simple category.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of media asset categories comprises at least one combination category.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of media asset categories includes at least one simple category and at least one combination category, and wherein the at least one combination category is based, at least in part, on the at least one simple category.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein receiving an indication further comprises:

receiving a selection of the first media asset category;

providing an option to delete the first media asset category and an option to restore the first media asset category; and

receiving either the option to delete or the option to restore.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving the indication further comprises receiving the indication to restore a plurality of deleted media asset categories, wherein the plurality of deleted media asset categories includes the first media asset category.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the receiving the indication further comprises receiving the indication to delete a plurality of deleted media asset categories, wherein the plurality of deleted media asset categories includes the first media asset category.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the received indication includes an indication of a user and wherein receiving the indication further comprises:

determining the user based on the received indication; and

updating stored user information based on the received indication.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein updating the stored status information further comprises changing the status information to indicate that the first media asset category has been deleted or has been restored based on the received indication.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein processing the stored list further comprises:

accessing the stored list of the plurality of media asset categories;

accessing the stored status information for each media asset category in the stored list; and

determining whether to include each media asset category in the display based on the stored status information for the respective media asset category.

11. A system for providing media asset categories, the system comprising:

a storage device configured to:

store a list of a plurality of media asset categories; and

store status information for a first media asset category of the plurality of media asset categories; and

processing circuitry configured to:

receive an indication to delete the first media asset category from a display of the stored list of the plurality of media asset categories or an indication to restore the first media asset category;

based on the received indication, search the stored list of the plurality of media asset categories to identify the first media asset category of the plurality of media asset categories;

update the stored status information for the identified first media asset category with the received indication; and

process the stored list of the plurality of media asset categories to generate a display of the stored list of the plurality of media asset categories based on the stored status information, wherein the generated display identifies each of the plurality of media asset categories in the generated display, wherein the processing to generate the display comprises excluding, from the generated display, the first media asset category if the first media asset category has the indication to delete in the stored status information, and wherein the processing to generate the display comprises including, on the generated display, the first media asset category if the media asset category has the indication to restore in the stored status information.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of media asset categories comprises at least one simple category.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of media asset categories comprises at least one combination category.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of media asset categories includes at least one simple category and at least one combination category, and wherein the at least one combination category is based, at least in part, on the at least one simple category.

15. The system of claim 11 wherein the processing circuitry configured to receive an indication is further configured to:

receive a selection of the first media asset category;

provide an option to delete the first media asset category and an option to restore the first media asset category; and

receive either the option to delete or the option to restore.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the processing circuitry configured to receive the indication is further configured to receive the indication to restore a plurality of deleted media asset categories, wherein the plurality of deleted media asset categories includes the first media asset category.

17. The system of claim 11 , wherein the processing circuitry configured to receive the indication is further configured to receive the indication to delete a plurality of deleted media asset categories, wherein the plurality of deleted media asset categories includes the first media asset category.

18. The system of claim 11 , wherein the received indication includes an indication of a user and wherein the processing circuitry configured to receive the indication is further configured to:

determine the user based on the received indication; and

update stored user information based on the received indication.

19. The system of claim 11 , wherein the processing circuitry configured to update the stored status information is further configured to change the status information to indicate that the first media asset category has been deleted or has been restored based on the received indication.

20. The system of claim 11 , wherein the processing circuitry configured to process the stored list is further configured to:

access the stored list of the plurality of media asset categories;

access the stored status information for each media asset category in the stored list; and

determine whether to include each media asset category in the display based on the stored status information for the respective media asset category.
