Abstract

An energy storage device includes a nano-structured cathode. The cathode includes a conductive substrate, an underframe and an active layer. The underframe includes structures such as nano-filaments and/or aerogel. The active layer optionally includes a catalyst disposed within the active layer, the catalyst being configured to catalyze the dissociation of cathode active material.

Claims (30)

1. A battery comprising:

a cathode electrode which is sealed from the atmosphere comprising

a supporting underframe,

an active material configured to release oxygen and lithium from the active material in a reduction reaction, the reduction reaction including the reduction of a lithium compound, the active material being disposed on the underframe, and

an active catalyzer deposited within the active material, the catalyzer configured to catalyze the reduction reaction; and

an anode electrode.

2. The battery of claim 1 , wherein the underframe includes a mesh of nanofibers.

3. The battery of claim 1 , further comprising an encapsulating layer around the cathode.

4. The battery of claim 1 , wherein the cathode includes an oxygen absorber.

5. A battery comprising:

a cathode electrode comprising

a supporting underframe comprising a support filament having a variation in its surface along its length,

an active material configured to release oxygen and lithium from the active material in a reduction reaction, the reduction reaction including the reduction of a lithium compound, the active material being disposed on the underframe, wherein the active material overlays a structure resulting from a variation in the surface of the support filament along the length of the support filament, and

an active catalyzer deposited within the active material, the catalyzer configured to catalyze the reduction reaction; and

an anode electrode.

6. The battery of claim 1 , wherein the active catalyzer is configured to catalyze dissociation of Li 2 O 2 into lithium and O 2 .

7. The battery of claim 5 , wherein the active catalyzer includes nano-particles are between 2 and 100 nanometers in diameter.

8. The battery of claim 1 , wherein the active material is configured to store lithium.

9. The battery of claim 1 , wherein the active catalyzer includes TiO 2 nanoparticles of active catalyzer.

10. The battery of claim 1 , wherein the cathode electrode further comprises an over-layer comprising nanoparticles of the active catalyzer or a film of the active catalyzer the over-layer being disposed on the active material.

11. The battery of claim 1 , wherein the cathode electrode further comprises an oxygen permeable membrane.

12. The battery of claim 1 , wherein the underframe includes nanofibers.

13. The battery of claim 1 , wherein the underframe includes a stacked cup structure.

14. The battery of claim 1 , wherein the underframe includes an aerogel.

15. The battery of claim 1 , wherein the underframe is doped with boron, nitrogen or phosphorus.

16. The battery of claim 1 , wherein the underframe is comprised of one or more of the following materials: carbon, boron nitride, silicon, TiO 2 , copper, transition metals, oxides, transition metal oxides, 3d transition metal oxides, nitrides, silicides, carbides, SiO 2 , silica, p-doped silica, n doped silica, TiN, SiC and TiC.
