Abstract

Devices and methods for substantially reducing the caloric efficiency of the digestive tract by capturing food being digested in the stomach 10 and/or anywhere else in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, absorbing or encapsulating the captured food into multiple capturing members and moving such multiple capturing members containing the ingestible encapsulated food down the GI tract, practically out of reach of the GI absorption organs, thus excluding the entrapped ingredients from being involved in the digestion and\or absorption process. The device is designed for oral delivery. The system can be comprised of liquid, food bars or a capsule system. The capsule system is comprised of an external capsule that dissolves in accordance with a temporal or ph dependent preset, which allows the food intake to be at least partially fluidic. The capsule system is further comprised of a mechanism designed to capture and isolate a portion of the food being digested.

Claims (17)

1. A method for containing a volume of gastrointestinal (GI) tract content, the method comprising:

dissolving a capsule in the GI tract, wherein the capsule contains a plurality of stacked expandable structures, and wherein each of the plurality of stacked expandable structures includes half spheres connected via a spring;

releasing the plurality of expandable structures into the GI tract, wherein the release is caused by the dissolution of the capsule in the GI tract, and wherein the releasing includes triggering the spring of the plurality of expandable structures to close the half spheres; and

capturing GI tract content via the plurality of expandable structures, wherein the triggered spring associated with half spheres scoops up the GI tract content as the half spheres close into a locked position.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the capsule dissolves at a preset pH level.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the capsule is introduced into the GI tract via ingestion by a user.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the expandable structures still within the GI tract dissolve after a preset time.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the capsule further includes folded structures that have a plurality of entry holes, wherein the folded structures regain their natural form when released into the GI tract from the capsule, and wherein GI tract content enter through the entry holes as the folded structures regain their natural form.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the capsule further includes polymer beads that absorb various liquids in the GI tract when released from the capsule.

7. A device for containing a volume of gastrointestinal (GI) tract content, the device comprising:

a capsule that is dissolvable in the GI tract, wherein the dissolving releases a plurality of stacked expandable structures in the GI tract; and

a plurality of stacked expandable structures, wherein each of the plurality of stacked expandable structures includes half spheres connected via a spring, wherein the release of the plurality of stacked expandable structures into the GI tract triggers the spring of the plurality of expandable structures to close the half spheres, and wherein the closure of the half spheres scoops up GI tract content as the half spheres close into a locked position thereby capturing GI tract content.

8. The device of claim 7 , wherein the capsule dissolves at a preset pH level.

9. The device of claim 7 , wherein the capsule is introduced into the GI tract via ingestion by a user.

10. The device of claim 7 , wherein the expandable structures still within the GI tract dissolve after a preset time.

11. The device of claim 7 , wherein the capsule further includes folded structures that have a plurality of entry holes, wherein the folded structures regain their natural form when released into the GI tract from the capsule, and wherein GI tract content enter through the entry holes as the folded structures regain their natural form.

12. The device of claim 7 , wherein the capsule further includes polymer beads that absorb content in the GI tract when released from the capsule.
