Abstract

Techniques for protecting joints in pavement structures include applying a hardener/densifier to one or more surfaces that define a joint in a pavement structure and, optionally, to portions of one or more surfaces that are located adjacent to the joint. One or more other compounds, such as hydrophobic materials, water resistant materials, anti-scaling compounds, anti-wear compounds, multi-functional blended compositions and the like, may also be applied to the surfaces that define a joint and/or to portions of one or more surfaces that are adjacent to the joint. A seal may also be formed in a joint in a pavement structure.

Claims (66)

1. A method for treating a joint in pavement, comprising:

applying a hardener/densifier to a joint in pavement; and

sealing the joint by applying a hydrophobic coating to the joint after applying the hardener/densifier, while the hardener/densifier continues to wet surfaces defining the joint and/or surfaces adjacent to the joint.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

cleaning the joint before applying the hardener/densifier to the joint.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein cleaning the joint includes removing a seal from the joint.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein cleaning the joint comprises directing pressurized water into the joint, directing pressurized air into the joint and/or vacuuming the joint.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein cleaning the joint comprises mechanically abrading the joint.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein mechanically abrading the joint comprises at least one of shot blasting, sand blasting, abrading with a wire brush or abrading or cutting with a saw blade.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein sealing the joint comprises applying a hydrophobic coating to the joint.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein applying the hydrophobic coating to the joint comprises applying an aqueous hydrophobic coating to the joint.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein applying the hydrophobic coating to the joint comprises applying an organic solvent-based hydrophobic coating to the joint.

10. The method of claim 7 , comprising applying the hydrophobic coating to the joint before applying the hardener/densifier to the joint.

11. The method of claim 7 , comprising applying the hydrophobic coating to a pavement surface on each side of the joint.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein applying the hydrophobic coating to the pavement surface on each side of the joint comprises applying the hydrophobic coating to all pavement surfaces within at least six inches of each side of the joint.

13. The method of claim 11 , comprising applying the hydrophobic coating to the pavement surface on each side of the joint without substantially introducing the hydrophobic coating into the joint.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein applying the hardener/densifier to the joint includes introducing the hardener/densifier into the joint.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein applying the hardener/densifier to the joint includes applying the hardener/densifier to pavement surfaces on each side of the joint.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein applying the hardener/densifier to pavement surfaces on each side of the joint comprises applying the hardener/densifier to all pavement surfaces within at least six inches of each side of the joint.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein applying the hardener/densifier to pavement surfaces on each side of the joint comprises applying the hardener/densifier to all pavement surfaces within at least 12 inches of each side of the joint.

18. The method of claim 15 , wherein applying the hardener/densifier to pavement surfaces on each side of the joint comprises applying the hardener/densifier to all pavement surfaces within at least 18 inches of each side of the joint.

19. The method of claim 15 , wherein applying the hardener/densifier to pavement surfaces on each side of the joint comprises applying the hardener/densifier to all pavement surfaces within a distance of up to 24 inches from each side of the joint.

20. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

applying a hardener/densifier and/or an anti-wear agent to the joint, over the seal.

21. The method of claim 20 , wherein applying the hardener/densifier and/or the anti-wear agent includes applying the hardener/densifier and/or the anti-wear agent to pavement surfaces on each side of the joint.

22. A method for treating a joint in pavement, comprising:

applying a hardener/densifier to a joint in pavement; and

applying a hydrophobic coating to pavement surfaces that remain wetted with the hardener/densifier.

The method of claim 22 , wherein applying the hydrophobic coating comprises applying the hydrophobic coating while surfaces of the pavement are saturated with the hardener/densifier, but substantially no standing water is present on the surfaces of the pavement that are saturated with the hardener/densifier.

24. The method of claim 22 , wherein applying the hardener/densifier comprises applying the hardener/densifier to the pavement surface on each side of the joint.

25. The method of claim 24 , wherein applying the hardener/densifier to the pavement surface on each side of the joint comprises applying the hardener/densifier to all pavement surfaces within six inches of the joint.

26. The method of claim 22 , wherein applying the hardener/densifier comprises introducing the hardener/densifier into the joint.

27. The method of claim 22 , wherein applying the hydrophobic coating comprises applying the hydrophobic coating to the pavement surface on each side of the joint.

28. The method of claim 27 , wherein applying the hydrophobic coating to the pavement surface on each side of the joint comprises applying the hydrophobic coating to all pavement surfaces within six inches of the joint.

29. The method of claim 27 , wherein applying the hydrophobic coating comprises applying the hydrophobic coating to the pavement surface on each side of the joint without substantially introducing the hydrophobic coating into the joint.

30. The method of claim 22 , further comprising:

cleaning the joint before applying the hardener/densifier and before applying the hydrophobic coating.

31. The method of claim 22 , further comprising:

sealing the joint by introducing a seal into the joint after applying the hydrophobic coating and after applying the hardener/densifier.

32. The method of claim 31 , further comprising:

applying a hardener/densifier and/or an anti-wear agent after sealing the joint.

33. A method for resealing a joint in pavement, comprising:

cleaning a joint in pavement to provide a clean joint;

applying a hardener/densifier to the clean joint; and

sealing the clean joint while the clean joint is at least partially wetted with the hardener/densifier.

34. The method of claim 33 , wherein cleaning the joint comprises refurbishing the joint.

35. The method of claim 33 , further comprising:

applying a hydrophobic coating.

36. The method of claim 35 , wherein applying the hydrophobic coating comprises applying the hydrophobic coating after cleaning the joint and after applying the hardener/densifier.

37. The method of claim 36 , wherein applying the hydrophobic coating comprises applying the hydrophobic coating to a pavement surface without substantially introducing the hydrophobic coating into the joint.

38. The method of claim 36 , further comprising:

applying the hardener/densifier to a pavement surface,

wherein applying the hydrophobic coating comprises applying the hydrophobic coating to the pavement surface while the pavement surface remains wetted with the hardener/densifier.

39. The method of claim 36 , wherein applying the hydrophobic coating comprises applying the hydrophobic coating to all pavement surfaces within six inches of the joint.

40. The method of claim 33 , further comprising:

applying an anti-wear agent after resealing the joint.

41. A pavement joint, comprising:

a first pavement element including a first pavement surface and a first end surface;

a second pavement element including a second pavement surface and a second end surface, the second pavement surface being substantially continuous with the first pavement surface of the first pavement element;

a joint defined by the first end surface of the first pavement element and the second end surface of the second pavement element, the first end surface and the second end surface comprising surfaces of the joint;

a reaction product of a hardener/densifier and concrete on surfaces of the joint and portions of the first pavement surface and the second pavement surface located adjacent to the joint; and

a hydrophobic coating on the reaction product, the hydrophobic coating comprising a silane-based coating, a siloxane-based coating and/or a silicone coating.

42. The pavement joint of claim 41 , further comprising:

a seal in the joint.

43. The pavement joint of claim 42 , wherein the hydrophobic coating covers portions of the reaction product on the portions of the first pavement surface and the second pavement surface.

44. The pavement joint of claim 43 , wherein the hydrophobic coating does not extend substantially into the joint.
