Locking shipping wedge
A locking shipping wedge is provided and generally includes a body portion having an elongate transverse member projecting from the body portion which is engageable with a drive assembly of a loading unit. A locking mechanism is provided on the body portion of the shipping wedge which is engageable with locking structure movably mounted within the loading unit.
1. A method of assembling a loading unit assembly with a surgical instrument, comprising:
providing a surgical instrument including a handle and an elongate body;
providing a loading unit adapted to releasably engage the surgical instrument and including a tool assembly and a drive assembly, the tool assembly including an anvil assembly and a cartridge assembly and the drive assembly being movable from a retracted position to an advanced position; and
engaging the loading unit with the elongate body and attaching the loading unit to the surgical instrument to move a lock plate within the loading unit to an unlocked position to permit separation of a shipping member from the loading unit.
2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising separating the shipping member from the loading unit such that a transverse member of a shipping member disengages from the drive assembly of the loading unit.
3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the shipping member is configured to releasably engage an elongate portion of the loading unit, the shipping member being locked onto the loading unit until the loading unit is attached to the surgical instrument.
4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the transverse member includes a pin and the drive assembly includes a hole dimensioned to receive the pin.
5. The method of claim 2 , wherein the shipping member includes a pair of flexible clips configured to be releasably positioned about the loading unit, and separating the shipping member includes moving the flexible clips.
6. The method of claim 2 , wherein the shipping member is configured to releasably engage an elongate portion of the loading unit, the shipping member being locked onto the loading unit until the loading unit is attached to the surgical instrument.
7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the transverse member includes a pin and the drive assembly includes a hole dimensioned to receive the pin.
8. The method of claim 1 , wherein attaching the loading unit includes sliding the lock plate to the unlocked position.
9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the lock plate is moved from a locked position to the unlocked position in response to engagement of the loading unit with a surgical instrument.
10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising separating the shipping member from the loading unit such that a transverse member of a shipping member disengages from the drive assembly of the loading unit.
11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the shipping member includes a pair of flexible clips configured to be releasably positioned about the loading unit, and removing the shipping member includes moving the flexible clips.
12. A method of assembling a loading unit assembly with a surgical instrument, comprising:
providing a surgical instrument including a handle and an elongate body;
providing a loading unit adapted to releasably engage the elongate body of the surgical instrument, the loading unit including a shipping member, a tool assembly, and a drive assembly, the tool assembly having an anvil assembly and a cartridge assembly, the drive assembly being movable from a retracted position to an advanced position through the tool assembly; and
engaging the loading unit with the elongate body to attach the loading unit to the surgical instrument, wherein engaging the loading unit with the elongate body effects movement of a lock plate within the loading unit from a locked position to an unlocked position to permit release of the shipping member from the loading unit.
13. The method of claim 12 , wherein attaching the loading unit includes sliding the lock plate to the unlocked position.
