Abstract

This invention encompasses rubber modified asphalt cement compositions, as well as systems, apparatuses, methods for preparing, as well as methods for using rubber-modified asphalt cement compositions.

Claims (23)

1. A method to prepare rubber-modified asphalt cement, comprising:

i) mixing rubber granules and asphalt to form a mixture;

ii) integrating the mixture with a high shear mixer (a) at a temperature of at least 510° F., and (b) for less than 90 minutes; and

iii) collecting the rubber-modified asphalt cement, the rubber-modified asphalt cement comprising rubber particles, the rubber particles having an average size of less than 1 micron.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the rubber-modified asphalt cement has an integration value of at least 99.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein, prior to the mixing, at least a portion of the rubber granules are pre-wet with further asphalt.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method is exclusive of air blowing.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the integrating is exclusive of oxidation.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the integrating is exclusive of substantial distillation of the asphalt.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the integrating is exclusive of substantial degradation of the asphalt.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein integrating comprises devulcanizing at least a portion of the rubber granules.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the rubber-modified asphalt cement comprises greater than 35 wt. % integrated rubber, relative to the weight of the rubber-modified asphalt cement.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the rubber-modified asphalt cement comprises in the range of 16-35 wt. % integrated rubber, relative to the weight of the rubber-modified asphalt cement.

11. A rubber-modified asphalt cement prepared according to the method of claim 1 .

12. An emulsion comprising the rubber-modified asphalt cement of claim 11 .

13. A slurry seal comprising the rubber-modified asphalt cement of claim 11 .

14. A binder composition comprising the rubber-modified asphalt cement of claim 11 .

15. A surface sealer comprising the rubber-modified asphalt cement of claim 11 .

16. A paving composition comprising the rubber-modified asphalt cement of claim 11 .

17. A cured coating comprising the rubber-modified asphalt cement of claim 11 .

18. A surface composition comprising the rubber-modified asphalt cement of claim 11 .

19. A method of applying the surface composition of claim 18 to a surface, comprising: computer rate controlled spreading by an asphalt spreader truckers, spreading with a hand spray wand, or spreading with a squeegee.

20. An industrial surface coated with the surface composition of claim 18 , wherein the surface composition increases the corrosion resistance of the industrial surface.
