Abstract

A chest drainage system including a collection device configured to receive fluid from the pleural cavity of a patient. A sensor is included to detect a pressure differential in the fluid. A display is configured to display a trend in occurrences of changes in pressure of the fluid over time in predetermined time increments based on a number of detections of pressure differentials that exceed a predetermined pressure differential during each of the predetermined time increments. The trend is correlative to the percentage of time that the patient is deemed to have an air leak in the pleural cavity in the predetermined time increments. The trend is derived from a ratio of the quantity of respiratory cycles of the patient for which the predetermined pressure differential is detected (QRC leak ) in the predetermined time increments to the total quantity of respiratory cycles of the patient in respective predetermined time increments (QRC total ).

Claims (15)

1. A chest drainage system comprising:

a collection device configured to receive fluid from the pleural cavity of a patient via a fluid pathway extending between the patient and the collection device;

a sensor for detecting a pressure differential between a first location in a proximal portion of the fluid pathway extending from the collection device toward the patient and a second location in a distal portion of the fluid pathway extending from the patient toward the collection device; and

a display configured to display a trend in occurrences of changes in pressure of the fluid over time, the trend configured to correlate with the percentage of time that the patient is deemed to have an air leak from the patient's lung into the pleural cavity,

wherein the trend is derived from a number of respiratory cycles of the patient for which it is detected that the pressure differential exceeds a predetermined pressure differential threshold.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the display is configured to indicate when the collection device is disconnected from the chest drainage system.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the display is configured to indicate a number of occurrences in which the detected fluid pressure exceeds a predetermined minimum magnitude.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the display is configured to indicate a total amount of air leakage in a respiratory wave form of the patient.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the display is generated from information including a duration of an air leak having at least a predetermined minimum magnitude.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the trend is further derived from a ratio of the quantity of respiratory cycles of the patient for which it is detected that the pressure differential exceeds the predetermined pressure differential threshold during a time period, with respect to the total quantity of respiratory cycles of the patient during the time period.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the trend is further derived from the number of respiratory cycles of the patient for which it is detected that the pressure differential exceeds the predetermined pressure differential threshold per unit time.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined pressure differential threshold is +2 cmH 2 O.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the trend is determined for each time increment in a plurality of predetermined time increments.

10. The system of claim 1 , comprising a plurality of the predetermined pressure differential thresholds and a plurality of status indicators corresponding to each of the predetermined pressure differential thresholds, wherein the system is configured to activate each status indicator when that status indicator's corresponding pressure differential threshold is exceeded.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the status indicators comprise different colored lights.
