Abstract

A method providing a manual welding apparatus configured to supply a welding wire to a welding gun. The welding gun has a trigger and an opening where the welding wire extends when the trigger is activated. The method also has a computer with a user interface that includes an automatic wire retract program. The program monitors the welding gun and determines when the trigger is disabled. The program indicates when a first condition is satisfied and retracts the welding wire so the welding wire does not extend from the opening of the welding gun.

Claims (19)

1. A method of retracting a welding wire into a welding gun after completion of a welding operation driven by a manual welding apparatus comprising the steps of:

accessing a setup menu associated with the welding apparatus to define a user-definable retract delay time or using a retract delay time defined by a previous user;

depressing a welding gun trigger to initiate forward feeding of a welding wire by rotational engagement of at least one welding wire feeder drive roller by communicating a start signal to a wire drive motor in operative connection with the at least one wire feeder drive roller and initiating a welding arc to begin the welding operation;

releasing the welding gun trigger and detecting when the welding arc is extinguished to determine a start time of the delay time; and

automatically retracting the welding wire without user intervention to a location within the welding gun after the expiration of the user-definable wait delay time by communicating an end signal to the wire drive motor in operative connection with the at least one wire feeder drive roller and reversing the direction of the welding wire by rotational engagement of at least one welding wire feeder drive roller with the welding wire by having at least one welding wire feeder drive roller rotating in a direction opposite of the direction employed when forward feeding the welding wire.

2. The method of claim 1 which further comprises the step of:

further adjusting the wait delay time by an offset value to refine the step of retracting.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of detecting when the welding arc is extinguished comprises:

detecting when a current associated with the welding operation falls below a threshold value.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of retracting comprises:

reversing a gear box associated with the at least one wire feeder drive roller.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein the step of retracting comprises:

using a sensor within the welding tip to determine how long the wire drive motor operates the gear box, the sensor indicating when the welding wire has retracted within the welding gun.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of retracting further comprises:

determining if a difference between a present time and an arc extinguishing time is equal to or greater than the user-definable wait delay time, (the first condition); and

determining if the trigger of the welding gun is not depressed, (the second condition); and

retracting the welding wire only if the first and second conditions are met.

7. The method of claim 1 which further comprises:

retrofitting the welding apparatus with wire retraction software.
