Abstract

Automated apparatus and methods for dispensing fluids into microplates utilizing microwell covers, the covers comprising open portions to allow a pipette access to one or more wells and impermeable portions which prevent the fluids from getting into wells shielded by the impermeable portion. The open portions and impermeable portions are preferably arranged and sized to align with alternating rows of wells in a particular microplate. Preferred covers are movably positioned on the microplate. Automated dispensing apparatus for use with microplates and microwell covers comprises a programmable controller, and suitable interfaces which allow the apparatus to be programmed, and which control a dispensing head such that pipettes are moved in the desired manner in order to take advantage of the protective features of the microwell covers. The apparatus also preferably comprises at least one transfer mechanism for moving a cover relative to a microplate at a dispensing station.

Claims (36)

1. An automated laboratory apparatus for dispensing fluid into wells of a microplate through a microwell cover comprising a plurality of openings and a plurality of impermeable portions, said apparatus comprising:

a fluid dispensing station;

a fluid dispenser comprising at least one dispensing tip;

a transfer mechanism for moving microwell covers relative to microplates at said dispensing station;

a programmable controller operatively linked to said transfer mechanism, said controller programmed with instructions causing said transfer mechanism to move a microwell cover comprising a plurality of openings and a plurality of impermeable portions relative to a microplate comprising a plurality of openings at said dispensing station in order to reposition the microwell cover relative to the microplate from a first position wherein an opening of the cover is aligned with a first well and an impermeable portion is aligned with a second well to a second position wherein said opening of the cover is aligned with said second well and said impermeable portion is aligned with a third well and

wherein said controller is also programmed to cause said transfer mechanism to move microplates and microwell covers from at least one supply location to said dispensing station.

2. An automated laboratory apparatus for dispensing fluid into wells of a microplate according to claim 1 wherein said fluid is a liquid.

An automated laboratory apparatus for dispensing fluid into wells of a microplate according to claim 1 for use with a microwell cover comprising a support surface for contacting a portion of a microplate comprising a plurality of wells, at least one impermeable portion configured to shield a first plurality of wells, and at least one open portion configured to be aligned above a second plurality of wells while permitting access to wells in the second plurality, wherein said controller is also programmed to cause said transfer mechanism to:

align at least one of said at least one open portion with at least one first well in a first plurality of wells;

dispense a fluid into at least one first well by passing said fluid through said open portion; and

after moving said microwell cover relative to said microplate so that said open portion is aligned with a different well, dispense at least one fluid into at least one second well by passing said fluid through an open portion of a said microwell cover, wherein said second well is different from said first well.

An automated laboratory apparatus for dispensing fluid into wells of a microplate according to claim 1 for use with a microwell cover comprising a support surface for contacting a portion of a microplate comprising a plurality of wells, at least one impermeable portion configured to shield a first plurality of wells, and at least one open portion configured to be aligned above a second plurality of wells while permitting access to wells in the second plurality, wherein said controller is also programmed to cause said transfer mechanism to:

move said dispensing tip to a position over said at least one impermeable portion;

subsequently move said dispensing tip to a position over an open portion;

dispense at least one liquid into at least one well by passing liquid through said open portion;

subsequently move said dispensing tip to a position over an impermeable portion; and

subsequently move said dispensing tip from a position over an impermeable portion to a position which is not over said microplate.

5. An automated laboratory apparatus for dispensing liquid into wells of a microplate according to claim 3 wherein said fluid is a liquid.

6. An automated laboratory apparatus for dispensing fluid into wells of a microplate through a microwell cover comprising a plurality of openings and a plurality of impermeable portions, said apparatus comprising:

a fluid dispensing station;

a fluid dispenser comprising at least one dispensing tip;

a transfer mechanism for moving microwell covers relative to microplates at said dispensing station;

a programmable controller operatively linked to said transfer mechanism, said controller programmed with instructions causing said transfer mechanism to move a microwell cover comprising a plurality of openings and a plurality of impermeable portions relative to a microplate comprising a plurality of openings at said dispensing station in order to reposition the microwell cover relative to the microplate from a first position wherein an opening of the cover is aligned with a first well and an impermeable portion is aligned with a second well to a second position wherein said opening of the cover is aligned with said second well and said impermeable portion is aligned with a third well, and

wherein said controller is also programmed to cause said transfer mechanism to:

move said dispensing tip to a position over said at least one impermeable portion;

subsequently move said dispensing tip to a position over an open portion;

dispense at least one liquid into at least one well by passing liquid through said open portion;

subsequently move said dispensing tip to a position over an impermeable portion; and

subsequently move said dispensing tip from a position over an impermeable portion to a position which is not over said microplate.

7. An automated laboratory apparatus for dispensing fluid into wells of a microplate according to claim 6 wherein said controller is also programmed to cause said transfer mechanism to move microplates and microwell covers from at least one supply location to said dispensing station.

8. An automated laboratory apparatus for dispensing fluid into wells of a microplate according to claim 6 wherein said fluid is a liquid.

An automated laboratory apparatus for dispensing fluid into wells of a microplate according to claim 6 for use with a microwell cover comprising a support surface for contacting a portion of a microplate comprising a plurality of wells, at least one impermeable portion configured to shield a first plurality of wells, and at least one open portion configured to be aligned above a second plurality of wells while permitting access to wells in the second plurality, wherein said controller is also programmed to cause said transfer mechanism to:

align at least one of said at least one open portion with at least one first well in a first plurality of wells;

dispense a fluid into at least one first well by passing said fluid through said open portion; and

after moving said microwell cover relative to said microplate so that said open portion is aligned with a different well, dispense at least one fluid into at least one second well by passing said fluid through an open portion of a said microwell cover, wherein said second well is different from said first well.

10. An automated laboratory apparatus for dispensing liquid into wells of a microplate according to claim 9 wherein said fluid is a liquid.
