Abstract

An end-effector assembly includes opposing first and second jaw members, at least one of which is movable relative to the other from a first position wherein the jaw members are disposed in spaced relation relative to one another to at least a second position closer to one another wherein the jaw members cooperate to grasp tissue therebetween. Each jaw member includes an electrically-conductive, tissue-engaging structure extending along a length thereof. Each electrically-conductive, tissue-engaging structure is configured to connect to a source of electrosurgical energy for conducting electrosurgical energy through tissue grasped between the opposing first and second jaw members to effect a tissue seal. The end-effector assembly includes a split electrode including a first electrode portion and a second electrode portion spaced apart from the first electrode portion and electrically-isolated therefrom by a gap defined therebetween. The first and second electrode portions are associated with one of the electrically-conductive tissue-engaging structures.

Claims (20)

1. An end-effector assembly, comprising:

opposing first and second jaw members, at least one of which is movable relative to the other from a first position wherein the first and second jaw members are disposed in spaced relation relative to one another to at least a second position closer to one another wherein the first and second jaw members cooperate to grasp tissue therebetween;

each of the first and second jaw members including an electrically-conductive, tissue-engaging structure extending along a length thereof, each electrically-conductive, tissue-engaging structure configured to connect to a source of electrosurgical energy for conducting electrosurgical energy through tissue grasped between the opposing first and second jaw members to effect a tissue seal;

a split electrode including a first electrode portion and a second electrode portion spaced apart from the first electrode portion by a gap defined therebetween, the first and second electrode portions associated with one of the electrically-conductive, tissue-engaging structures; and

a connector member coupled between the first electrode portion and the second electrode portion and extending across the gap defined between the first electrode portion and the second electrode portion, the connector member having an electrically-conductive member configured to electrically short the first and second electrode portions to one another, wherein the split electrode is electrically-isolated from the first and second jaw members.

2. The end-effector assembly of claim 1 , wherein the split electrode is configured for tissue dissection and coagulation.

3. The end-effector assembly of claim 1 , wherein the split electrode further includes an insulator disposed within at least a portion of the gap.

4. The end-effector assembly of claim 3 , wherein the electrically-conductive, tissue-engaging structure associated with the first and second electrode portions includes a longitudinally-extending knife channel defined therein.

5. The end-effector assembly of claim 4 , wherein the insulator extends from a distal end of the longitudinally-extending knife channel to a distal end of the split electrode.

6. The end-effector assembly of claim 4 , wherein the insulator extends from a distal end of the longitudinally-extending knife channel along an axis substantially perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the longitudinally-extending knife channel.

7. The end-effector assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first electrode portion includes:

a non-electrically-conductive portion; and

an electrically-conductive, peripheral-edge portion extending from a lateral edge of the non-electrically-conductive portion.

8. The end-effector assembly of claim 7 , wherein the non-electrically-conductive portion of the first electrode portion is disposed, at least in part, between the gap and the electrically-conductive, peripheral-edge portion of the first electrode portion.

9. The end-effector assembly of claim 7 , wherein the electrically-conductive, tissue-engaging structures include a longitudinally-extending knife channel defined therein, and wherein the non-electrically-conductive portion of the first electrode portion includes a longitudinally-extending portion disposed adjacent to the longitudinally-extending knife channel along at least a portion of the length thereof.

10. The end-effector assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first electrode portion is configured to be energized with a first polarity of electrosurgical energy and the second electrode portion is configured to be energized with a second polarity of electrosurgical energy.

11. The end-effector assembly of claim 1 , wherein the split electrode is configured to electrically deactivate during sealing of tissue grasped between the electrically-conductive, tissue-engaging structures.

12. The end-effector assembly of claim 1 , wherein the split electrode is configured to conduct monopolar energy to tissue.

13. The end-effector assembly of claim 1 , wherein the connector member protrudes from the electrically-conductive, tissue-engaging structures and includes a non-electrically-conductive member disposed on the electrically-conductive member to electrically isolate the electrically-conductive, tissue-engaging structures from one another.

14. The end-effector assembly of claim 7 , wherein the electrically-conductive, peripheral-edge portion extends distally of the non-electrically-conductive portion.
