Abstract

One or more terminals that are coupled to a packet-based network are installed with a first instance and/or a second instance of a communication client application of a first user. At times, the communication client application can be configured to enable the first user to communicate with other users using a first communication system implemented over the packet-based network. In some cases, a controller coupled to the packet-based network can be used to maintain separate privacy settings for each of the first and second instances, and thereby control the privacy of the first user in relation to the other users within the first communication system in dependence on which of the first and second instances is active.

Claims (75)

1. A server device, comprising:

a memory configured to store sets of privacy settings associated with a user account, each set of privacy settings associated with a respective instance of a communication client application that enables communications over a packet-based network with other communication clients; and

at least one hardware processor to implement a management application configured to:

receive an indication of a currently active instance of the communication client application;

identify a current set of privacy settings associated with the currently active instance of the communication client application for the communications associated with the user account over the packet-based network;

retrieve the current set of privacy settings associated with the currently active instance of the communication client application; and

apply the current set of privacy settings associated with the currently active instance of the communication client application to the communications over the packet-based network.

2. The server device of claim 1 , wherein the management application is configured to store the sets of privacy settings in a look-up table in the memory.

3. The server device of claim 2 , wherein the management application is configured to:

receive a user identifier that identifies the user account;

receive a token identifier that identifies the currently active instance of the communication client application; and

retrieve the current set of privacy settings associated with the currently active instance of the communication client application from the look-up table based, at least in part, on the user identifier and the token identifier.

4. The server device of claim 1 , wherein:

the management application is configured to store a list comprising a plurality of contacts associated with the user account; and

the memory is configured to maintain at least two different groupings of the plurality of contacts.

5. The server device of claim 4 , wherein the memory is configured to maintain respective contact privacy settings for each grouping of the at least two different groupings of the plurality of contacts.

6. The server device of claim 5 , wherein:

the memory is configured to:

maintain, for a first instance of the communication client application associated with the user account, a first set of the respective contact privacy settings; and

maintain, for a second instance of the communication client application associated with the user account, a second set of the respective contact privacy settings; and

the management application is configured to:

apply the first set of the respective contact privacy settings to the communications over the packet-based network when the first instance is the currently active instance; and

apply the second set of the respective contact privacy settings to the communications over the packet-based network when the second instance is the currently active instance.

7. The server device of claim 4 , wherein the management application is configured to:

identify the currently active instance of the communication client application when a contact is added to the plurality of contacts; and

partition the contact into a respective contact grouping of the at least two different groupings that is associated with the currently active instance of the communication client application.

8. A method, comprising:

executing a management application on a hardware processor of a server device performing:

storing, in memory, sets of privacy settings associated with a user account at the server device, each set of privacy settings associated with a respective instance of a communication client application that enables communications over a packet-based network with other communication clients;

receiving an indication of a currently active instance of the communication client application;

identifying a current set of privacy settings associated with the currently active instance of the communication client application for the communications associated with the user account over the packet-based network;

retrieving the current set of privacy settings associated with the currently active instance of the communication client application; and

applying the current set of privacy settings associated with the currently active instance of the communication client application to the communications over the packet-based network.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

storing the sets of privacy settings in a look-up table.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

receiving a user identifier that identifies the user account;

receiving a token identifier that identifies the currently active instance of the communication client application; and

retrieving the current set of privacy settings associated with the currently active instance of the communication client application from the look-up table based, at least in part, on the user identifier and the token identifier.

11. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

storing a list comprising a plurality of contacts associated with the user account; and

maintaining at least two different groupings of the plurality of contacts.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

maintaining respective contact privacy settings for each grouping of the at least two different groupings of the plurality of contacts.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising:

maintaining, for a first instance of the communication client application associated with the user account, a first set of the respective contact privacy settings;

maintaining, for a second instance of the communication client application associated with the user account, a second set of the respective contact privacy settings;

applying the first set of the respective contact privacy settings to the communications over the packet-based network when the first instance is the currently active instance; and

applying the second set of the respective contact privacy settings to communications over the packet-based network when the second instance is the currently active instance.

14. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

identifying the currently active instance of the communication client application when a contact is added to the plurality of contacts; and

partitioning the contact into a respective contact grouping of the at least two different groupings that is associated with the currently active instance of the communication client application.

15. A client terminal device, comprising:

a memory configured to maintain a communication client application associated with a user account;

at least one hardware processor to implement a first instance of the communication client application and a second instance of the communication client application effective to enable communications associated with the user account over a packet-based network with other communication clients via a respective instance of the first instance or the second instance, each respective instance of the communication client application configured to:

send a set of privacy settings associated with the respective instance of the communication client application to a server device that configures the communications over the packet-based network with the other communication clients;

send, to the server device, a message indicating that the first instance of the communication client application or the second instance of the communication client application is the active instance associated with the user account;

retrieve, from the server device, the respective set of privacy settings associated with the active instance of the communication client application; and

apply the respective set of privacy settings to the active instance of the communication client application for the communications over the packet-based network.

16. The client terminal device of claim 15 , wherein:

the first instance of the communication client application comprises a web browser based instance of the communication client application; and

the second instance of the communication client application comprises a separate application from the web browser based instance.

17. The client terminal device of claim 15 , wherein the active instance of the communication client application is configured to send, in the message indicating the active instance, a user identifier associated with the user account and a token identifier associated with the active instance of the communication client application.

18. The client terminal device of claim 15 , wherein:

the memory is configured to:

maintain a first set of privacy settings associated with the first instance of the communication client application, including a privacy setting that allows the communications with an identified communication client;

maintain a second set of privacy settings associated with the second instance of the communication client application, including a different privacy setting that blocks the communications with the identified communication client; and

the client terminal device is further configured to block or allow the communications with the identified communication client based on the active instance of the communication client application.

19. The client terminal device of claim 15 , wherein:

the first instance of the communication client application is configured to send, to the server device, a new contact of at least one other communication client to add to a contact list; and

the second instance of the communication client application is configured to retrieve, from the server device, the contact list with the new contact.

20. The client terminal device of claim 15 , wherein the active instance of the communication client application is further configured to:

display the respective set of privacy settings in a user interface;

receive, via the user interface, at least one modification to the respective set of privacy settings; and
