Abstract

Methods and apparatus are provided for performing Soft-Output Viterbi Algorithm (SOVA) detection at higher data rates than achievable with conventional designs. A received signal is processed by (i) determining at least three selection signals that define a plurality of paths through a multiple-step trellis into a given state, wherein a first of the plurality of paths is a winning path for each single-step-trellis period of a multiple-step-trellis cycle, a second path is a winning path for a first single-step-trellis period and is a losing path for a second single-step-trellis period of a multiple-step-trellis cycle and a third path is a losing path for a first single-step-trellis period and is a winning path for a second single-step-trellis period of a multiple-step-trellis cycle; and (ii) determining at least one reliability value (such as a reliability value for a bit decision associated with a maximum-likelihood path through the multiple-step trellis or a plurality of reliability values for each multiple-step-trellis cycle).

Claims (22)

1. A method for processing a received signal using a multiple-step trellis, said method comprising the steps of:

determining a reliability value for at least one bit decision.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of generating, for each state, a path metric difference for each single-step-trellis period of the multiple-step-trellis cycle.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein at least two of said at least three selection signals are determined in a first multiple-step-trellis cycle and said path metric differences are generated in a subsequent multiple-step-trellis cycle.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of generating a path metric difference Δ 0− a second single-step-trellis period of the multiple-step-trellis cycle based on a difference between the first path and the second path.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of generating a path metric difference Δ −1 for a first single-step-trellis period of the multiple-step-trellis cycle based on a difference between the first path and the third path.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein said step of determining a reliability value determines a reliability value for a bit decision associated with a maximum-likelihood path through said multiple-step trellis.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein said step of determining a reliability value determines a plurality of reliability values for each multiple-step-trellis cycle.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of determining a plurality of paths that compete with a best path, wherein said step of determining a plurality of paths further comprises the step of generating, for each bit within a reliability update window, a plurality of equivalence bits, where each of said equivalence bits indicates whether said best path and one of said competing paths agree in terms of a bit decision.

9. A signal processor for processing a received signal using a multiple-step trellis, comprising:

an add-compare-select unit for generating at least three selection signals that define a plurality of paths through a multiple-step trellis into a given state, wherein a first of said plurality of paths is a winning path for each single-step-trellis period of a multiple-step-trellis cycle, a second of said plurality of paths is a winning path for a first single-step-trellis period and is a losing path for a second single-step-trellis period of a multiple-step-trellis cycle and a third of said plurality of paths is a losing path for a first single-step-trellis period and is a winning path for a second single-step-trellis period of a multiple-step-trellis cycle, wherein each of said paths has a corresponding bit decision and wherein one or more of said selection signals selects one of said corresponding bit decisions associated with each of said plurality of paths; and

a reliability unit that determines a reliability value for at least one bit decision.

10. The signal processor of claim 9 , wherein said add-compare-select unit is further configured to generate, for each state, a path metric difference for each single-step-trellis period of the multiple-step-trellis cycle.

11. The signal processor of claim 9 , wherein said add-compare-select unit is further configured to generate a path metric difference Δ 0− for a second single-step-trellis period of the multiple-step-trellis cycle based on a difference between the first path and the second path and a path metric difference Δ −1 for a first single-step-trellis period of the multiple-step-trellis cycle based on a difference between the first path and the third path.

12. The signal processor of claim 9 , wherein said add-compare-select unit further comprises a comparator to compare path metrics of said second path and a fourth path to identify said second path and a subtractor to determine a difference between the path metrics of the first path and the second path.

13. The signal processor of claim 9 , wherein said add-compare-select unit further comprises a plurality of comparators for computing path metric differences between a plurality of paths into a given state; a selector to select a path metric difference Δ −1 , which is a difference between the first and third paths; a comparator that compares the path metric difference between said first path and said second path and the path metric difference between said first path and a path that is a losing path for said first and second single-step-trellis periods of a multiple-step-trellis cycle to generate a selection signal F; and a selector to select a path metric difference Δ 0 , which is a path metric difference between the first and second paths.

14. The signal processor of claim 9 , wherein said reliability unit determines a plurality of reliability values for each multiple-step trellis cycle.

15. The signal processor of claim 9 , wherein said reliability unit is comprised of one or more functional elements, wherein each of said functional elements comprises a plurality of functional units and one or more registers, wherein each functional unit comprises a comparator, a multiplexer, and wherein the output of the comparator and a equivalence bit control the multiplexer.

16. The signal processor of claim 15 , wherein at least two of said functional units operate in series per multiple-step-trellis cycle, and wherein at least two groups of said at least two functional units operate in parallel per multiple-step-trellis cycle.

17. The signal processor of claim 9 , further comprising a path comparison unit that determines a plurality of paths that compete with a best path, wherein said path comparison unit further generates, for each bit within a reliability update window, a plurality of equivalence bits, where each of said equivalence bits indicates whether said best path and one of said competing paths agree in terms of a bit decision.

18. The signal processor of claim 17 , wherein said path comparison unit employs a register exchange architecture to store survivor bits and at least two functional units for a one-step-trellis period, wherein each functional unit comprises a multiplexer and a logical circuit to compute at least one equivalence bit per one-step-trellis period indicating whether the bit for a respective path and the bit for said best path are equivalent.
