Abstract

A torque based park lock assembly for motor vehicles, especially passenger cars and trucks equipped with automatic transmissions, includes a lobed wheel secured to a transmission output shaft and a rotation restricting flexible lever which may be selectively moved into engagement with the lobed wheel by a cam. A bidirectional motor rotates the cam. A return spring translates the lever away from the lobed wheel when the cam is rotated into a disengaged (non-Park) position.

Claims (37)

1. A park lock assembly for an automatic transmission comprising, in combination,

a lobed wheel adapted for securement to an output shaft of a transmission,

an arm disposed adjacent said lobed wheel and having a first end pivotally secured to a mounting member and a second end,

a cam disposed adjacent said second end of said lever,

a bi-directional motor and gear assembly having an output coupled to said cam, and

means for biasing said lever arm away from said lobed wheel.

2. The park lock assembly of claim 1 wherein said means for biasing is a spring.

3. The park lock assembly of claim 2 wherein said spring is a compression spring.

4. The park lock assembly of claim 1 wherein said lobed wheel includes a first plurality of lobes alternating with a second plurality of recesses.

5. The park lock assembly of claim 4 wherein said first plurality of lobes includes seven of said lobes.

6. The park lock assembly of claim 1 further including a housing for supporting said mounting member, said motor and said biasing means.

7. The park lock assembly of claim 1 wherein said lever arm includes an enlarged circular portion and a through opening at said first and said second ends.

8. A park lock assembly for an automatic transmission comprising, in combination,

a lobed wheel adapted to rotate with an output of a transmission,

a lever operably disposed adjacent said lobed wheel and having a first pivotally mounted end and a second end,

a cam for translating said second end of said lever,

a bi-directional motor and gear assembly having an output coupled to said cam, and

means for biasing said lever arm away from said lobed wheel.

9. The park lock assembly of claim 8 further including a transmission housing and an output shaft for rotating said lobed wheel.

10. The park lock assembly of claim 8 further including a plurality of rollers disposed on said lobed wheel.

11. The park lock assembly of claim 8 wherein said means for biasing is a spring.

12. The park lock assembly of claim 8 wherein said lobed wheel includes a first plurality of lobes alternating with a second plurality of recesses.

13. The park lock assembly of claim 8 wherein said cam includes a single cam surface and shoulder.

14. The park lock assembly of claim 8 wherein said cam rotates less than 360°.

15. A park lock assembly for an automatic transmission comprising, in combination,

a housing,

a rotatable output shaft supported in said housing

a lobed wheel secured for rotation with said output shaft,

a lever arm operably disposed adjacent said lobed wheel and having a first end pivotally secured in said housing and a second end,

a cam for engaging and translating said second end of said lever,

a bi-directional motor and gear assembly having an output coupled to said cam, and

a return spring for biasing said lever arm away from said lobed wheel.

16. The park lock assembly of claim 15 wherein said lobed wheel includes a plurality of rollers.

17. The park lock assembly of claim 15 wherein said lobed wheel includes seven lobes.

18. The park lock assembly of claim 15 wherein said lever arm includes an enlarged circular portion and a through opening at said first and said second ends.

19. The park lock assembly of claim 15 wherein said cam includes a single cam surface and shoulder.

20. The park lock assembly of claim 15 wherein said return spring is a compression spring.
