Abstract

A data writing system includes an array of cells for storing data and a write transducer that moves over a selected cell in the array of cells. The write transducer includes a writer producing a write magnetic field that intersects the selected cell. The write transducer also includes a plasmon resonator that is adjacent the writer. The plasmon resonator is shaped to receive lower power density radiation and to provide plasmon radiation at a higher power density to an optical spot intersecting with the selected cell. The plasmon radiation heats the selected cell above a write temperature.

Claims (30)

1. A data writing system, comprising:

a medium including an array of cells for storing data; and

a write transducer that is moveable relative to the medium to provide a movement of a bearing surface of the write transducer over a selected cell in the array, the write transducer comprising:

a plasmon resonator that has a shape that directs lower power density radiation in a first plane to a side of a pin, and the plasmon resonator provides plasmon radiation from the pin at a higher power density to an optical spot intersecting with the selected cell, the plasmon radiation heating the selected cell above a write temperature; and

a writer producing a write magnetic field that intersects the selected cell, the writer comprises a write coil and a write core, the write core having poles that define a write gap between the poles, a lower portion of the pin is positioned in the write gap, and the poles being aligned in a second plane that is transverse to the first plane such that the poles do not block the lower power density radiation from reaching the pin.

2. The data writing system of claim 1 wherein the write core comprises a main core body that is spaced apart from the pin, and the poles extend inwardly from the main core body toward a lower end of the pin.

3. The data writing system of claim 2 wherein the write core comprises a core extension that extends from the main core body to a substrate.

4. The data writing system of claim 1 wherein the core is arranged generally perpendicular to the bearing surface.

5. The data writing system of claim 1 wherein the core is arranged generally parallel to the bearing surface.

6. The data writing system of claim 1 wherein the write core is formed of a material selected from the group of iron, cobalt and nickel.

7. The data writing system of claim 1 wherein the write magnetic field is transverse to a direction of relative movement.

8. The data writing system of claim 1 wherein the write pole structure produces a field that is parallel to the direction of relative movement.

9. A write transducer that is moveable relative to the medium to provide a movement of a bearing surface of the write transducer over a selected cell in the array, the write transducer comprising:

a plasmon resonator that has a shape that directs lower power density radiation in a first plane to a side of a pin, and the plasmon resonator provides plasmon radiation from the pin at a higher power density to an optical spot intersecting with the selected cell, the plasmon radiation heating the selected cell above a write temperature; and

a writer producing a write magnetic field that intersects the selected cell, the writer comprises a write coil and a write core, the write core having poles that define a write gap between the poles, a lower portion of the pin is positioned in the write gap, the poles being aligned in a second plane that is transverse to the first plane such that the poles do not block the lower power density radiation from reaching the pin.

10. The write transducer of claim 9 wherein the coil comprises at least three turns.

11. The write transducer of claim 9 wherein the core is arranged generally perpendicular to the bearing surface.

12. The write transducer of claim 9 wherein the core is arranged generally parallel to the bearing surface.

13. The write transducer of claim 9 wherein the write core is formed of a material selected from the group of iron, cobalt and nickel.

14. The write transducer of claim 9 wherein the write magnetic field is transverse to a direction of relative movement.

15. The write transducer of claim 9 wherein the write pole structure produces a field that is parallel to the direction of relative movement.

16. A data writing system, comprising:

a medium including an array of cells for storing data; and

a write transducer that is moveable relative to the medium to provide a movement of a bearing surface of the write transducer over a selected cell in the array, the write transducer comprising:

a plasmon resonator that has a shape that directs lower power density radiation to a side of a pin, and the plasmon resonator provides plasmon radiation from the pin at a higher power density to an optical spot intersecting with the selected cell, the plasmon radiation heating the selected cell above a write temperature; and

a writer producing a write magnetic field that intersects the selected cell, the writer comprises a write coil and a write core, the write core having poles that define a write gap between the poles, the pin is positioned in the write gap, the poles extending inwardly from a main write core body toward the pin such that the poles do not block the lower power density radiation from reaching the pin.

17. The data writing system of claim 16 wherein the core is arranged generally parallel to the bearing surface.

18. The data writing system of claim 16 wherein the write core is formed of a material selected from the group of iron, cobalt and nickel.

19. The data writing system of claim 16 wherein the write magnetic field is transverse to a direction of relative movement.

20. The data writing system of claim 16 wherein the write pole structure produces a field that is parallel to the direction of relative movement.
