Abstract

A golf ball includes a ‘dual core’ formed from an inner core layer and an outer core layer. The inner core has an outer surface and a center and is typically formed from a substantially-homogenous rubber composition such that the center of the core has a hardness of about 72 Shore C to about 78 Shore C and a trans content of about 5% to 9%, and the outer surface of the inner core has a trans content of about 5% to 9%. The trans content of the outer surface and the center of the inner core are preferably within 2% of each other and, more preferably are substantially the same to define a zero trans gradient along a radius of the inner core.

Claims (11)

1. A golf ball comprising:

a core having an outer surface and a geometric center and being formed from a first substantially homogenous rubber composition;

an intermediate layer disposed about the core and comprising an ionomeric material; and

a cover layer disposed about the intermediate layer, the cover comprising a castable polyurea or a castable polyurethane;

wherein the outer surface has a trans content of about 6% to 10%, the geometric center has a trans content of about 1% to 3%, and the trans content of the outer surface is greater than the trans content of the geometric center by about 6% or greater to define a trans gradient.

2. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein a hardness of the outer surface is lower than a hardness of the geometric center to define a negative hardness gradient of about −1 to about −15.

3. The golf ball of claim 2 , wherein the negative hardness gradient is about −5 to −10.

4. The golf ball of claim 2 , wherein the outer surface has a hardness of about 68 to about 80 Shore C and the geometric center has a hardness of about 68 to 80 Shore C.

5. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein a hardness of the outer surface is greater than a hardness of the geometric center to define a positive hardness gradient of about 0 to 5.

6. The golf ball of claim 5 , wherein the positive hardness gradient is about 2 to 5.

7. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the core has a diameter of about 1.51 inches to 1.55 inches.
