Abstract

Described herein is a building panel comprising a substrate and an odor and VOC reducing coating applied to the substrate, the coating comprising a blend of a first component comprising ethylene urea; a second component comprising silica; and a rheology modifier.

Claims (29)

1. A coating composition for reducing VOC and odors, the coating composition comprising:

a solid component comprising a blend of

ethylene urea;

silica gel; and

a liquid carrier comprising water.

2. The coating composition according to claim 1 , wherein the liquid carrier is present in an amount ranging from about 25 wt. % to about 75 wt. % based on the total weight of the coating composition.

3. The coating composition according to claim 1 , the solid component further comprising a rheology modifier selected from silicate mineral, alkali-swellable compounds, and combinations thereof.

4. The coating composition according to claim 3 , wherein the rheology modifier is present in an amount ranging from about 0.5 wt. % to about 55 wt. % based on the total weight of the solid component.

5. The coating composition according to claim 1 , wherein the silica gel has a particle size ranging from about 0.5 μm to about 120 μm.

6. The coating composition according to claim 1 , wherein the silica gel is present in an amount ranging from about 5 wt. % to about 40 wt. % based on the total weight of the solid component.

7. The coating composition according to claim 1 , wherein the ethylene urea and the silica gel are present in a weight ratio ranging from about 1:1 to about 1:8.

8. The coating composition according to claim 1 , wherein the coating composition has a viscosity ranging from about 200 cps to about 4,000 cps as measured on a Brookfield viscometer at 10 RPM at room temperature.

9. A coating composition for reducing VOC and odors, the coating composition comprising:

a solid component comprising a blend of

silica gel;

a surfactant;

a rheology modifier; and

a liquid carrier comprising water.

10. The coating composition according to claim 9 , wherein the carrier is present in an amount ranging from about 25 wt. % to about 75 wt. % based on the total weight of the coating composition.

11. The coating composition according to claim 9 , wherein the silica gel has a particle size ranging from about 0.5 μm to about 120 μm.

12. The coating composition according to claim 9 , wherein the silica gel is present in an amount ranging from about 5 wt. % to about 40 wt. % based on the total weight of the solid component.

13. The coating composition according to claim 9 , wherein the rheology modifier selected from silicate mineral, alkali-swellable compounds, and combinations thereof.

14. The coating composition according to claim 9 , wherein the rheology modifier is present in an amount ranging from about 0.1 wt. % to about 55 wt. % based on the total weight of the solid component.

15. The coating composition according to claim 12 , wherein the surfactant is present in an amount ranging from about 0.1 wt. % to about 17.0 wt. % based on the total weight of the dry component.

16. The coating composition according to claim 12 , wherein the surfactant is non-ionic that is present in an amount ranging from about 0.1 wt. % to about 0.5 wt. % based on the total weight of the dry component.

17. The coating composition according to claim 12 , wherein the surfactant is ionic that is present in an amount ranging from about 1 wt. % to about 7 wt. % based on the total weight of the dry component.

18. The coating composition according to claim 12 , wherein the surfactant is an emulsifier that is present in an amount ranging from about 2 wt. % to about 12 wt. % based on the total weight of dry component.

19. The coating composition according to claim 12 , further comprising filler having a particle size ranging from about 0.1 μm to 300 μm.

20. A coating composition for reducing VOC and odors, the coating composition comprising a blend of ethylene urea and silica in a weight ratio ranging from about 1:1 to about 1:8.
