Abstract

An electronic device includes a liquid crystal display device having a first substrate, a second substrate bonded to the first substrate, with liquid crystal material held between the first substrate and the second substrate, and an upper polarizing plate affixed to the second substrate. A protective member is disposed over the upper polarizing plate, and an adhesive member is disposed between the protective member and the upper polarizing plate without an air layer between the protective member and the upper polarizing plate. The protective member is configured as a protective cover of the electronic device.

Claims (46)

1. A display device used in a hand-held electronic device comprising:

a first polarizing plate;

a first substrate provided on the polarizing plate;

a second substrate opposed to the first substrate;

a second polarizing plate provided on the second substrate; and

a protective plate provided on the second polarizing plate;

wherein

the protective plate is a protective cover of the hand-held electronic device,

the first substrate and the second substrate are bonded to each other by a sealing member,

the protective plate has a first surface and a second surface opposite the first surface,

the second polarizing plate is bonded to the second surface of the protective plate without an air layer,

the first polarizing plate has a third surface opposed to the first substrate, and a fourth surface opposite the third surface, and

a thickness from the fourth surface of the first polarizing plate to the first surface of the protective plate is no greater than 2 mm.

2. The display device according to claim 1 , wherein

the protective plate overlaps with the sealing member in a sectional view.

3. The display device according to claim 1 , wherein

the second polarizing plate is bonded to the second surface of the protective plate.

4. The display device according to claim 1 , wherein

the hand-held electronic device has a frame which holds the display device, and

an end of the frame does not protrude from the first surface of the protective plate, in a sectional view.

5. The display device according to claim 1 , wherein

a thickness of one of the first substrate and the second substrate is no greater than 0.5 mm.

6. A display device used in a hand-held electronic device comprising:

a back light;

a first substrate provided over the back light;

a second substrate opposed to the first substrate;

a first polarizing plate provided on the second substrate; and

a protective plate provided on the first polarizing plate;

wherein

the first substrate and the second substrate are bonded to each other by a sealing member,

the protective plate is a protective cover of the hand-held electronic device,

the protective plate has a first surface and a second surface opposite the first surface,

the first polarizing plate is bonded to the second surface of the protective plate,

the hand-held electronic device has a frame which holds the display device including the back light, the frame is held in a case, and

in a sectional view, the frame is a concave shape, and does not have a portion opposed to the first surface of the protective plate.

7. The display device according to claim 6 , wherein

the protective plate overlaps with the sealing member in a sectional view.

8. The display device according to claim 6 , wherein

a thickness of one of the first substrate and the second substrate is no greater than 0.5 mm.

9. The display device according to claim 6 , further comprising a second polarizing plate provided between the first substrate and the back light,

the second polarizing plate has a first surface and a second surface, which is opposite to the first surface,

the first surface of the second polarizing plate is adhered to the first substrate.

10. The display device according to claim 9 , wherein

a thickness from the second surface of the second polarizing plate to the first surface of the protective plate is no greater than 2 mm.

11. The display device according to claim 6 , wherein

no air layer is formed between the first polarizing plate and the protective plate in a display region.
