Abstract

The present invention generally relates to an anchoring and sealing tool. In one aspect, downhole tool for use in a wellbore is provided. The tool includes a tubular having a tapered outer surface. The tool further includes an expandable annular member disposed on the tubular. The expandable member has an anchor portion. The tool further includes a seal member disposed in a groove of the expandable annular member. The seal member has one or more anti-extrusion bands, wherein the seal member and the anchor portion are configured to be expandable radially outward into contact with the wellbore as the expandable annular member moves along the tapered outer surface of the tubular.

an anchor portion;

a first groove;

a first seal member disposed in the first groove;

wherein the anchor portion and the first seal member are configured to be expandable radially outward into contact with the wellbore as the expandable annular member moves relative to the tubular from the first position to the second position along the tapered outer surface.

2. The downhole tool of claim 1 , wherein a gap is defined between a side of the first seal member and a side of the first groove.

3. The downhole tool of claim 2 , wherein the gap is configured to close completely upon expansion of the expandable annular member.

4. The downhole tool of claim 1 , wherein the expandable annular member has a second seal member disposed in a second groove.

5. The downhole tool of claim 4 , wherein the expandable annular member has a third seal member disposed in a third groove, wherein the third seal member and third groove are disposed on a first side of the expandable annular member opposite of a second side of the expandable annular member, wherein the first and second seal members and first and second grooves are disposed on the second side of the expandable annular member.

6. The downhole tool of claim 1 , further comprising:

a retaining sleeve disposed about the tubular and coupled to a first end of the expandable annular member, wherein the retaining sleeve is slidable relative to the tubular; and

an actuator sleeve disposed about the tubular and coupled to the retaining sleeve, wherein the actuator sleeve is configured to move the retaining sleeve and the expandable annular member, wherein the movement moves the expandable annular member from the first position to the second position.

7. A downhole tool for use in a wellbore, the tool comprising:

a tubular having a tapered outer surface; and

an expandable annular member disposed about the tapered outer surface the tubular, the expandable annular member having:

a first groove;

an anchor portion, wherein the anchor portion includes a gripping surface that is configured to penetrate the wellbore upon expansion of the expandable annular member, and wherein the anchor portion is configured to support the downhole tool in the wellbore; and

a first seal member disposed in the first groove of the expandable annular member, wherein a gap is defined between a side of the first seal member and a side of the first groove, the first seal member having one or more anti-extrusion bands;

wherein the anchor portion and the first groove are formed integrally in the expandable annular member, and wherein the first seal member and the anchor portion are configured to be expandable radially outward into contact with the wellbore as the expandable annular member moves along the tapered outer surface of the tubular, wherein the gap is reduced upon the expansion of the expandable annular member.

8. The downhole tool of claim 7 , wherein the expandable annular member includes a second groove formed in a radially inward surface thereof, and wherein a second seal member is disposed in the second groove.

9. The downhole tool of claim 7 , wherein the gap is configured to close completely upon expansion of the expandable annular member.

10. The downhole tool of claim 7 , wherein a seal portion is positioned along a first end of the expandable annular member and the anchor portion is positioned along a second end of the expandable annular member.

11. The downhole tool of claim 7 , further comprising:

a retaining sleeve disposed about the tubular and coupled to a first end of the expandable annular member, wherein the retaining sleeve is movable relative to the tubular.

12. The downhole tool of claim 11 , further comprising:

an actuator sleeve disposed about the tubular and coupled to the retaining sleeve, wherein the actuator sleeve is configured to move the retaining sleeve and the expandable annular member relative to the tubular.

13. A downhole tool for use in a tubular, the downhole tool comprising:

a mandrel having a first portion with a first thickness and a second portion with a second greater thickness, the mandrel including a ratchet surface;

a ratchet ring disposed on the ratchet surface of the mandrel;

an expandable annular member disposed on the mandrel, the expandable annular member being configured to expand radially outward as the expandable annular member moves relative to the mandrel from the first portion of the mandrel to the second portion of the mandrel, wherein the expandable annular member includes:

an anchor portion for gripping the tubular;

a seal portion including a seal member for creating a seal with the tubular upon expansion of the expandable annular member, the seal member having one or more anti-extrusion bands, the seal member is disposed in a groove that is formed on an outer surface of the expandable annular member, and wherein a gap is defined between a side of the seal member and a side of the groove, wherein the gap is configured to be reduced upon expansion of the expandable annular member; and

an annular lip for engaging a plurality of collet fingers, wherein the seal portion is positioned between the anchor portion and the annular lip; and

a retaining sleeve having the plurality of collet fingers at a first end thereof, the collet fingers interlocking with the annular lip of the expandable annular member, wherein the ratchet ring is coupled to the retaining sleeve at a second end of the retaining sleeve opposite the first end.

14. The tool of claim 13 , wherein the gap is configured to close completely upon expansion of the expandable annular member.

15. The tool of claim 13 , further comprising an actuator sleeve disposed about the mandrel and coupled to the retaining sleeve, wherein the actuator sleeve is configured to move the retaining sleeve and the expandable annular member relative to the mandrel.

16. A downhole tool for use in a wellbore, comprising:

a tubular having a first thickness portion and a second thickness portion, the second thickness portion has a greater thickness than the first thickness portion, and wherein the second thickness portion has a tapered outer surface; and
