Abstract

A communications system is to communicate with an application server storing a plurality of applications. The communications system includes a mobile wireless communications device configured to store at least one application from among the plurality of applications, the at least one application having stored version information associated therewith. An intermediate server is configured to update the mobile wireless communications device by at least obtaining respective current version information for associated current versions of the plurality of applications and obtaining the stored application version information from the mobile wireless communications device for the at least one stored application. The stored application version information is compared with the current version information for the at least one stored application. New application portions are downloaded from a current application associated with the current version information, and the new application portions are sent to the mobile wireless communications device.

Claims (36)

1. A method, comprising:

transmitting to a server system, by a mobile wireless communications device, version information for an application stored at the mobile wireless communications device;

receiving, by the mobile wireless communications device from the server system, a first updated part of the stored application without the mobile wireless communications device previously transmitting a request to the server system for the first updated part; and

updating, by the mobile wireless communications device, the stored application using the first updated part to thereby update the stored application.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the mobile wireless communications device receiving a notification from the server system of availability of the first updated part.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the notification is received without the mobile wireless communications device transmitting a prior request for the notification.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, by the mobile wireless communications device from the server system, a further updated part of the stored application after receiving the first updated part; and

further updating, by the mobile wireless communications device, the stored application using the further updated part.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein updating the stored application comprises the mobile wireless communications device replacing a stored part of the application with the first updated part of the application.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the stored application comprises a game application, a document processing application, or a messaging application.

7. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing code which, when executed by at least one processor of a mobile wireless communications device, causes the mobile wireless communications device to:

transmit to a server system version information for an application stored at the mobile wireless communications device;

receive from the server system a first updated part of the stored application without the mobile wireless communications device previously transmitting a request to the server system for the first updated part; and

update the stored application using the first updated part to thereby update the stored application.

8. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7 , wherein the mobile wireless communications device is further caused to receive a notification from the server system of availability of the first updated part.

9. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 8 , wherein the notification is received without the mobile wireless communications device transmitting a prior request for the notification.

10. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7 , wherein the mobile wireless communications device is further caused to:

receive from the server system a further updated part of the stored application after receiving the first updated part; and

further update the stored application using the further updated part.

11. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7 , wherein updating the stored application comprises replacing a stored part of the application with the first updated part of the application.

12. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7 , wherein the stored application comprises a game application, a document processing application, or a messaging application.

13. A mobile wireless communications device, comprising:

at least one wireless communications subsystem;

a memory device; and

at least one processor in operative communication with the at least one wireless communications subsystem and the memory device, the at least one processor being configured to:

transmit, using the at least one wireless communications subsystem, to a server system, version information for an application stored in the memory device;

receive, using the at least one wireless communications subsystem, from the server system a first updated part of the stored application without the mobile wireless communications device previously transmitting a request to the server system for the first updated part; and

update the stored application using the first updated part to thereby update the stored application.

14. The mobile wireless communications device of claim 13 , wherein the at least one processor is further configured to receive, using the at least one wireless communications subsystem, a notification from the server system of availability of the first updated part.

15. The mobile wireless communications device of claim 14 , wherein the notification is received without prior transmission of a request for the notification by the mobile wireless communications device.

16. The mobile wireless communications device of claim 13 , wherein the at least one processor is further configured to:

receive from the server system, using the at least one wireless communications subsystem, a further updated part of the stored application after receiving the first updated part; and

further update the stored application using the further updated part.

17. The mobile wireless communications device of claim 13 , wherein the at least one processor is configured to update the stored application by replacing a stored part of the application in the memory device with the first updated part of the application.

18. The mobile wireless communications device of claim 13 , wherein the stored application comprises a game application, a document processing application, or a messaging application.
