Abstract

An electronic device includes a liquid crystal display device having a first substrate, a second substrate bonded to the first substrate, with liquid crystal material held between the first substrate and the second substrate, and an upper polarizing plate affixed to the second substrate. A protective member is disposed over the upper polarizing plate, and an adhesive member is disposed between the protective member and the upper polarizing plate without an air layer between the protective member and the upper polarizing plate. The protective member is configured as a protective cover of the electronic device.

Claims (34)

1. A display device used in a hand-held electronic device comprising:

a back light;

a first polarizing plate provided on the back light;

a first substrate provided on the first polarizing plate;

a second substrate opposed to the first substrate;

a second polarizing plate provided on the second substrate; and

a protective plate provided on the second polarizing plate;

wherein

the first substrate and the second substrate are adhered to each other by a sealing member,

the protective plate is a protective cover of the hand-held electronic device,

the protective plate has a first surface and a second surface opposite the first surface, and the second surface of the protective plate is opposed to the second polarizing plate,

the first polarizing plate is adhered to the back light,

the back light is held in a frame that is a concave shape, and

in a sectional view, the frame does not have a portion protrude from the first surface of the protective plate.

2. The display device according to claim 1 , wherein

the protective plate overlaps with the sealing member in a sectional view.

3. The display device according to claim 1 , wherein

a thickness of one of the first substrate and the second substrate is no greater than 0.5 mm.

4. The display device according to claim 1 , wherein

the first polarizing plate provided between the first substrate and the back light,

the first polarizing plate has a first surface and a second surface, which is opposite to the first surface, and

the first surface of the first polarizing plate is adhered to the first substrate.

5. The display device according to claim 4 , wherein

a thickness from the second surface of the first polarizing plate to the first surface of the protective plate is no greater than 2 mm.

6. The display device according to claim 1 , wherein

no air layer is formed between the second polarizing plate and the protective plate in a display region.

7. The display device according to claim 1 , wherein

a thickness of one of the first substrate and the second substrate is no greater than 0.5 mm.

8. The display device according to claim 1 , wherein

a thickness of the protective plate is 0.2 mm to 1 mm.

9. The display device according to claim 1 , wherein

a thickness of one of the first substrate and the second substrate is thinner than a thickness of the other of the first substrate and the second substrate.

10. The display device according to claim 1 , further comprising a phase difference plate provided on the second substrate,

wherein the phase difference plate is located between the second substrate and the polarizing plate.
