Abstract

A communications system is to communicate with an application server storing a plurality of applications. The communications system includes a mobile wireless communications device configured to store at least one application from among the plurality of applications, the at least one application having stored version information associated therewith. An intermediate server is configured to update the mobile wireless communications device by at least obtaining respective current version information for associated current versions of the plurality of applications and obtaining the stored application version information from the mobile wireless communications device for the at least one stored application. The stored application version information is compared with the current version information for the at least one stored application. New application portions are downloaded from a current application associated with the current version information, and the new application portions are sent to the mobile wireless communications device.

Claims (27)

1. A method at a computer system, the method comprising:

determining that at least one updated part of an application at a mobile device is to be provided to the mobile device, wherein the application comprises a plurality of parts suitable for individual transmission to the mobile device; and

initiating transmission of at least a first updated part, but less than all of the plurality of parts, of the application to the mobile device without receiving a request from the mobile device to transmit the at least one updated part, to update a version of the application stored at the mobile device.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising initially obtaining version information for the application stored at the mobile device.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein obtaining the version information comprises receiving the version information from the mobile device.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising sending a notification to the mobile device of availability of at least one updated part.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the notification is sent without a prior request for the notification from the mobile device.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the computer system initiates transmission of a further updated part of the application to the mobile device after the first updated part of the application is received by the mobile device and applied to the application as stored by the mobile device to update the application.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the application comprises a game application, a document processing application, or a messaging application.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising transmitting at least the first updated part of the application to the mobile device.

9. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing code which, when executed by at least one processor of a computer system, causes the computer system to:

determine that at least one updated part of an application at a mobile device is to be provided to the mobile device, wherein the application comprises a plurality of parts suitable for individual transmission to the mobile device; and

initiate transmission of at least a first updated part, but less than all of the plurality of parts, of the application to the mobile device without receiving a request from the mobile device to transmit the at least one updated part, to update a version of the application stored at the mobile device.

10. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 9 , wherein the computer system is initially caused to obtain version information for the application stored at the mobile device.

11. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the computer system obtains the version information by receiving the version information from the mobile device.

12. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 9 , wherein the computer system is caused to send a notification to the mobile device of availability of at least one updated part.

13. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 12 , wherein the computer system is caused to send the notification without a prior request for the notification from the mobile device.

14. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 9 , wherein the computer system is caused to initiate transmission of a further updated part of the application to the mobile device after the first updated part of the application is received by the mobile device and applied to the application as stored by the mobile device to update the application.

15. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 9 , wherein the application comprises a game application, a document processing application, or a messaging application.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 9 , wherein the computer system is caused to transmit the at least the first updated part of the application to the mobile device.

17. A computer system, comprising:

at least one processor configured to:

determine that at least one updated part of an application at a mobile device is to be provided to the mobile device, wherein the application comprises a plurality of parts suitable for individual transmission to the mobile device; and

initiate transmission of at least a first updated part, but less than all of the plurality of parts, of the application to the mobile device without receiving a request from the mobile device to transmit the at least one updated part, to update a version of the application stored at the mobile device.

18. The computer system of claim 17 , wherein the at least one processor is further configured to receive version information for the application from the mobile wireless communications device.

19. The computer system of claim 17 , wherein the at least one processor is further configured to send a notification to the mobile device of availability of at least one updated part without a prior request for the notification from the mobile device.

20. The computer system of claim 17 , wherein the at least one processor is configured to initiate transmission of a further updated part of the application to the mobile device after the first updated part of the application is received by the mobile device and applied to the application as stored by the mobile device to update the application.
