Abstract

A communication system, network interface, and communication port is provided for interconnecting a network of multimedia devices. The multimedia devices can send streaming and/or non-streaming data across the network. The network accommodates all such types of data and assigns data types to time slots or frame segments within each frame to ensure streaming data maintains its temporal relationship at the receiver consistent with the transmitter. A signaling byte is preferably used to keep track of an amount by which isochronous streaming data occupies a frame segment.

Claims (27)

1. A transmit port, comprising:

a framer adapted for receiving a substantially continuous stream of real-time data sampled at a first rate and placing a portion of the sampled data within a segment of a frame of data upon a network clocked at a second rate dissimilar from the first rate; and

wherein the frame of data includes at least one signaling bit indicating an amount by which said portion of the continuous stream of data occupies the frame segment.

2. The transmit port as recited in claim 1 , wherein the signaling bit is within a frame occupied by the frame segment or a frame preceding or following a frame occupied by the frame segment.

3. The transmit port as recited in claim 1 , wherein said at least one signaling bit comprises N bits.

4. The transmit port as recited in claim 3 , wherein a most significant bit of said N bits indicates whether said portion of the continuous stream occupies the entire frame segment.

5. The transmit port as recited in claim 3 , wherein all but the most significant bit of said N bits indicates the number of bytes within the frame segment that are not occupied by said portion of the continuous stream.

6. The transmit port as recited in claim 3 , wherein N equals eight.

7. The transmit port as recited in claim 1 , further comprising a comparator coupled to the framer for comparing the first rate with the second rate and for notifying the framer to include said at least one signaling bit if the first rate is greater or less than the second rate.

8. The transmit port as recited in claim 1 , further comprising a comparator coupled to the framer for comparing the first rate with the second rate and for notifying the framer to place the portion of the sampled data in the segment allocated with an additional byte field if the first rate is greater than the second rate.

9. The transmit port as recited in claim 1 , further comprising a comparator coupled to the framer for comparing the first rate with the second rate and for notifying the framer to include at least one empty or invalid byte of data within the frame segment if the first rate is dissimilar from the second rate.

10. The transmit port as recited in claim 1 , wherein said portion of the continuous stream is allocated to an additional byte field within the frame segment if the first rate is greater than the second rate.

11. The transmit port as recited in claim 1 , wherein said frame segment is one of a plurality of frame segments allocated in time sequence across each said frame of data.

12. A communication system, comprising:

a transmitter configured to sample a continuous stream of data at a first rate and place a portion of the continuous stream of data within a segment of a frame of data having a signaling bit which indicates an amount of the segment occupied by said portion of the continuous stream;

a transmission medium coupled to the transmitter for transmitting the frame segment at a second rate dissimilar from the first rate; and

a receiver coupled to the transmission medium for forwarding to a multimedia device the amount of the segment occupied by the portion of the continuous stream.

13. The communication system as recited in claim 12 , wherein the signaling bit comprises N bits.

14. The communication system as recited in claim 13 , wherein a most significant bit of said N bits indicates whether said portion of the continuous stream occupies the entire frame segment.

15. The communication system as recited in claim 13 , wherein all but the most significant bit of said signaling bits indicates the number of bytes within the frame segment that are not occupied by said portion of the continuous stream.

16. A method for transmitting data, comprising:

sampling streaming data at a sampling rate; and

transmitting a portion of the streaming data within a segment of a frame allocated an additional byte if the frame containing the segment is transmitted across a network at a frame transfer rate dissimilar from the sampling rate.

17. The method as recited in claim 12 , further comprising transmitting a signaling bit within the frame containing the frame segment or within a frame preceding or following the frame containing the frame segment.

18. The method as recited in claim 17 , wherein the signaling bit comprises N bits.

19. The method as recited in claim 18 , further comprising using a most significant bit of said N bits to indicates whether said portion of the continuous stream occupies the entire frame segment.

20. The method as recited in claim 18 , further comprising using all but the most significant bit of said N bits to indicates the number of bytes within the frame segment that are not occupied by said portion of the continuous stream.
