Abstract

The present invention relates to novel lactic acid bacterial micro-organisms that have been isolated and selected for their probiotic potential and their use for the preparation of petfood compositions intended to improve the health of pets, and to compositions containing the same.

Claims (30)

1. A pet food composition comprising an isolated strain of lactic acid bacteria having an effective amount of probiotic activity wherein the isolated strain is capable of surviving and colonizing in a gastrointestinal tract of pets, wherein the isolated strain is selected from the group consisting of Lactobacillus reuteri NCC2581 (CNCM I-2448), Lactobacillus reuteri NCC2592 (CNCM I-2450), Lactobacillus rhamnosus NCC2583 (CNCM I-2449), Lactobacillus reuteri NCC2603 (CNCM I-2451), Lactobacillus reuteri NCC2613 (CNCM I-2452), Lactobacillus acidophilus NCC2628 (CNCM I-2453), Enterococcus faecium SF 68 (NCIMB 10415) and combinations thereof.

2. The pet food composition according to claim 1 , wherein the isolated strain further includes at least one of a supernatant of a culture thereof and a metabolite thereof and wherein the isolated strain is provided within at least one of an ingestible support and a pharmaceutical matrix.

3. The pet food composition according to claim 1 , wherein the isolated strain is in an amount ranging from about 10 4 cfu/animal and day to about 10 12 cfu/animal and day.

4. The pet food composition according to claim 1 , wherein the pet food composition further comprises a prebiotic.

5. The pet food composition according to claim 1 , wherein the composition is a nutritionally complete pet food including at least one of a powdered form, a dried form, a wet form, a chilled form a shelf stable form, a dietary adjunct and a supplement.

6. The pet food composition according to claim 5 , wherein each of the dietary adjunct and the supplement are provided together with a pet food in an additional packaging including a sachet.

A pet food composition for health of a gastrointestinal tract of pets comprising an isolated strain of lactic acid bacteria having an effective amount of probiotic activity wherein the isolated strain is capable of surviving and colonizing in the gastrointestinal tract, wherein the isolated strain is selected from the group consisting of Lactobacillus reuteri NCC2581 (CNCM I-2448), Lactobacillus reuteri NCC2592 (CNCM I-2450), Lactobacillus rhamnosus NCC2583 (CNCM I-2449), Lactobacillus reuteri NCC2603 (CNCM I-2451), Lactobacillus reuteri NCC2613 (CNCM I-2452), Lactobacillus acidophilus NCC2628 (CNCM I-2453), Enterococcus faecium SF 68 (NCIMB 10415) and combinations thereof.

8. The pet food composition according to claim 7 , wherein the isolated strain further includes at least one of a supernatant of a culture thereof and a metabolite thereof and wherein the isolated strain is provided within at least one of an ingestible support and a pharmaceutical matrix.

9. The pet food composition according to claim 7 , wherein the isolated strain is in an amount ranging from about 10 4 cfu/animal and day to about 10 12 cfu/animal and day.

10. The pet food composition according to claim 7 , wherein the composition further comprises a prebiotic.

11. The pet food composition according to claim 7 , wherein the composition is a nutritionally complete pet food including at least one of a powdered form, a dried form, a wet form, a chilled form a shelf stable form, a dietary adjunct and a supplement.

12. The pet food composition according to claim 11 , wherein each of the dietary adjunct and the supplement are provided together with a pet food in an additional packaging including a sachet.

A pet food composition for health of a skin and/or a coat of pets, the pet food composition comprising an isolated strain of lactic acid bacteria having an effective amount of probiotic activity wherein the isolated strain is capable of surviving and colonizing in a gastrointestinal tract of pets, wherein the isolated strain is selected from the group consisting of Lactobacillus reuteri NCC2581 (CNCM I-2448), Lactobacillus reuteri NCC2592 (CNCM I-2450), Lactobacillus rhamnosus NCC2583 (CNCM I-2449), Lactobacillus reuteri NCC2603 (CNCM I-2451), Lactobacillus reuteri NCC2613 (CNCM I-2452), Lactobacillus acidophilus NCC2628 (CNCM I-2453), Enterococcus faecium SF 68 (NCIMB 10415) and combinations thereof.

14. The pet food composition according to claim 13 , wherein the isolated strain further includes at least one of a supernatant of a culture thereof and a metabolite thereof and wherein the isolated strain is provided with at least one of an ingestible support and a pharmaceutical matrix.

15. The pet food composition according to claim 13 , wherein the isolated strain is in an amount ranging from about 10 4 cfu/animal and day to about 10 12 cfu/animal and day.

16. The pet food composition according to claim 13 , wherein the composition comprises a prebiotic.

17. The pet food composition according to claim 13 , wherein the composition is a nutritionally complete pet food including at least one of a powdered form, a dried form, a wet form, a chilled form a shelf stable form, a dietary adjunct and a supplement.

18. The pet food composition according to claim 17 , wherein each of the dietary adjunct and the supplement are provided together with a pet food in an additional packaging including a sachet.

19. A pet food composition capable of regulating an immune system of pets, the pet food composition comprising an isolated strain of lactic acid bacteria having an effective amount of probiotic activity wherein the isolated strain is capable of surviving or colonizing in a gastrointestinal tract of pets, wherein the isolated strain is selected from the group consisting of Lactobacillus reuteri NCC2581 (CNCM I-2448), Lactobacillus reuteri NCC2592 (CNCM I-2450), Lactobacillus rhamnosus NCC2583 (CNCM I-2449), Lactobacillus reuteri NCC2603 (CNCM I-2451), Lactobacillus reuteri NCC26 13 (CNCM I-2452), Lactobacillus acidophilus NCC2628 (CNCM I-2453), Enterococcus faecium SF 68 (NCIMB 10415) and combinations thereof.

20. The pet food composition according to claim 19 , wherein the isolated strain further includes at least one of a supernatant of a culture thereof and a metabolite thereof and wherein the isolated strain is provided within at least one of an ingestible support and a pharmaceutical matrix.

21. The pet food composition according to claim 19 , wherein the isolated strain is in an amount ranging from about 10 4 cfu/animal and day to about 10 12 cfu/animal and day.

22. The pet food composition according to claim 19 , wherein the composition further comprises a prebiotic.

23. The pet food composition according to claim 19 , wherein the composition is a nutritionally complete pet food including at least one of a powdered form, a dried form, a wet form, a chilled form a shelf stable form, a dietary adjunct and a supplement.

24. The pet food composition according to claim 23 , wherein each of the dietary adjunct and the supplement are provided together with a pet food in an additional packaging including a sachet.

25. A pet food composition capable of ameliorating or reducing effects of aging in pets, the composition comprising an isolated strain of lactic acid bacteria having an effective amount of probiotic activity wherein the isolated strain is capable of colonizing or surviving in a gastrointestinal tract of pets, wherein the isolated strain is selected from the group consisting of Lactobacillus reuteri NCC2581 (CNCM I-2448), Lactobacillus reuteri NCC2592 (CNCM I-2450), Lactobacillus rhamnosus NCC2583 (CNCM I-2449), Lactobacillus reuteri NCC2603 (CNCM I-2451), Lactobacillus reuteri NCC2613 (CNCM I-2452), Lactobacillus acidophilus NCC2628 (CNCM I-2453), Enterococcus faecium SF 68 (NCIMB 10415) and combinations thereof.

26. The pet food composition according to claim 25 , wherein the isolated strain further includes at least one of a supernatant of a culture thereof and a metabolite thereof and wherein the isolated strain is provided within at least one of an ingestible support and a pharmaceutical matrix.

27. The pet food composition according to claim 25 , wherein the isolated strain is in an amount ranging from about 10 4 cfu/animal and day to about 10 12 cfu/animal and day.

28. The pet food composition according to claim 25 , wherein the pet food composition further comprises a prebiotic.

29. The pet food composition according to claim 25 , wherein the composition includes a form selected from the group consisting of a nutritionally complete pet food including at least one of a powdered form, a dried form, a wet form, a chilled form and a shelf stable form, a dietary adjunct and a supplement.

30. The pet food composition according to claim 29 , wherein each of the dietary adjunct and the supplement are provided together with a pet food in an additional packaging including a sachet.
