Capacitor substrates made of refractory metal nitrides
View Patent ↗Electrolytic capacitor powder substrates are provided of refractory metal nitrides to reduce instability at a substrate-oxide (as formed) interface whereby the resultant capacitor sensitivity to hear, bias and frequency is reduced.
1. A method of making a material suitable for use as a capacitor anode comprising the steps of providing a metal, deoxidizing the metal and before passivation of the surface of the metal, nitriding the metal to form a nitride compound thereof, forming an anodic oxide film at the surface of the nitrided metal,
whereby a thermodynamically stable metal nitride substrate-oxide film is established such that, when the material is heat treated and tested as a capacitor, the capacitor exhibits low bias dependence of capacitance, low temperature dependence of capacitance and low frequency dependence of capacitance relative to a capacitor made from analog refractory metal (un-nitrided) material that is of similar size, morphology construction and subjected to similar heat treatment and test conditions.
2. Substrate product as made by the method of claim 1 .
3. The method of claim 1 wherein the refractory metal powder is selected from the group consisting of Ta and Nb and the powder after nitriding is selected from the group consisting of substantially (atomic basis) tantalum nitride and niobium nitride.
