Abstract

A method and an apparatus are provided for post-layout optimization of an integrated circuit. In one instance, only local transformations accomplished by incremental changes to placement and routing are provided, so as to avoid the costly design iteration loop that requires re-synthesis, re-place and re-route. Optimization can be provided in multiple optimization phases each accomplishing a specified set of transformations. Static timing analysis is performed at the end of each set of local transformations to determine if further optimization steps are required. In one instance, the physical design is first scanned for mismatch between drivers and loads. Then, in a second optimization phase, “hot spots” in the physical design are identified for local transformation using a “bidirectional combinational total negative slack” (BCTNS) algorithm. In subsequent phases, optimization based on meeting setup times and hold times in a critical path are performed.

Claims (22)

1. A system for post-layout design optimization, comprising:

a library interface that accesses a standard cell library;

a timing analyzer interface that accesses a static timing analyzer;

a design tool interface that accesses a place and route design tool;

a design database that stores a physical design of an integrated circuit, comprising instances of a plurality of standard cells from the standard cell library;

a first control program that obtains timing information of said instances from said static timing analyzer through said timing analyzer interface, said timing information being based on parasitic impedance models; and

a second control program that applies local transformations which replace selected ones of said instances using said timing information by other instances of standard cells obtained through said library interface from said standard cell library to optimize said physical design of said integrated circuit.

2. A system as in claim 1 , wherein said timing information comprises a slack value for each terminal of said physical design.

3. A system as in claim 2 , wherein said slack value being obtained by said timing analyzer using both a forward sweep and a backward sweep of said physical design.

4. A system as in claim 1 , wherein said slack value is computed based on a required signal arrival time and a latest signal anival time.

5. A system as in claim 1 , wherein said second control program optimizes said physical design based on trading-off speed performance for silicon area.

6. A system as in claim 1 , wherein said second control program optimizes said physical design based on a comparison between a change in speed performance for a change in silicon area.

7. A system as in claim 1 , wherein said second control program groups standard cells in said standard cell library into function groups, each function group consisting of logically equivalent members made up of standard cells in said standard cell library.

8. A system as in claim 7 , wherein said local transformations replace said instances by other instances within the same function group.

9. A system as in claim 8 , wherein said other instances are selected according on the basis of operating range of loads each of said other instances are rated to drive.

10. A system as in claim 1 , wherein said second control program assigns to each instance a potential improvement value.

11. A system as in claim 10 , wherein said second control program computes for each terminal of each instance a foreward priority value and a backward priority value based on a forward sweep and a backward sweep of said physical design.

12. A system as in claim 1 , wherein said second control program identifies instances at which a driver mismatches with an output load.

13. A system as in claim 12 , wherein said second control program ranks said instances according to a descending order of potential timing improvement.

14. A system as in claim 1 , wherein said local transformations comprise node off-loading.

15. A system as in claim 1 , wherein said second control program optimizes said physical design by selecting and applying said local transformations to cell instances having potential improvement in slack exceeding a predetermined value.

16. A system as in claim 1 , wherein said local transformation apply to said instances one of cell instance downsizing, cell instance upsizing, node off-loading, cell instance input-swapping, and logic duplication.
