Pet food product and method of manufacture
View Patent ↗A pet food is provided, comprising a sorbent food body and a fluid carrier comprising a functional ingredient absorbed into the body. The body preferably is relatively moist, having a moisture content for example of from 35% to 60% by weight and firm structure that is resilient under initial biting by a pet animal. Protein content is preferably at least 20% by weight. The sorptivity of the body is increased by depleting the body of a first liquid, for example by causing drying by exposure to a source of dry heat, such as in roasting, grilling, frying and baking. Methods of manufacture are disclosed including providing a sorptive food body, causing the body to take up a carrier fluid containing a functional ingredient and packing the body in suitable packaging. The invention further provides delivery means for delivering a functional ingredient to a pet animal, the delivery means comprising a sorbent food body with the functional ingredient absorbed therein. The functional ingredient may be a nutrient or a pharmaceutical.
1. A pet food comprising a layered formed body structure including interior and exterior zones and having a functional ingredient contained within a hydrocolloid-based liquid carrier, wherein said formed body has a caloric density from about 1.5 kcal/gram to about 3.0 kcal/gram, a moisture content from about 30% to, about 60% moisture by weight, a protein content from about 20% to about 40% by weight and a starch source, and the entire exterior zone of the body has an acidic coating consisting of a ground or particulate food grade acid, wherein the functional ingredient is selected from the group consisting of a vitamin, a mineral, an antioxidant, a prebiotic, a probiotic, a plant extract, and combinations thereof.
2. A pet food according to claim 1 wherein the body has substantially varied surface coloration.
3. A pet food product according to claim 2 wherein the surface coloration is produced by exposure of the body to a source of dry heat.
4. A pet food according to claim 1 wherein the body is capable of exuding a fatty substance when subjected to light pressure.
5. A pet food according to claim 1 wherein the exterior zone has a moisture content less than the interior zone.

A pet food comprising a layered formed body structure including interior and exterior zones and having a functional ingredient contained within a hydrocolloid-based liquid carrier, wherein said formed body has a caloric density from about 1.5 kcal/gram to about 3.0 kcal/gram, a moisture content from about 30% to about 60% moisture by weight, a protein content from about 20% to about 40% by weight and a starch source, and the entire exterior zone an acidic coating consisting of a ground or particulate food grade acid, wherein the exterior zone has a moisture content less than the interior zone, wherein the functional ingredient is selected from the group consisting of a vitamin, a mineral, an antioxidant, a prebiotic, a probiotic, a plant extract, and combinations thereof.
