Abstract

An apparatus that authenticates the contents of identification documents provided by different issuers having machine-readable and/or human readable information is disclosed. The contents of the identification documents are verified without encountering any human error. The verified contents of the identification documents may be used for identification purposes such as age restricted purchases, preordained organ donors or possible criminal prosecution. The verified contents of the identification documents may be logged to provide ID checking compliance and/or may be transferred to a remote computer for additional processing or logging.

Claims (62)

1. Apparatus comprising:

an information reader at a first location for reading information from a driver license issued by an issuing jurisdiction, said information having a predetermined format corresponding to said jurisdiction; and

first circuitry at said first location for receiving the information read from the driver license and determining whether the read information read comports with said predetermined format, said first circuitry also outputting the information read to a remote location for further processing, said remote location being connected to said first location via a signal path.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the driver license includes machine readable information readable by said information reader.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the driver license includes human intelligible information readable by said information reader.

The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the driver license is provided by a bearer at the first location and wherein said first circuitry provides a first output when it determines that the read information conforms to the predetermined format, and a second output when such information does not, and said apparatus further including a display at said first location for displaying the first result and the second result.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the signal path is a telephone communication link.

6. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein the first circuitry includes a CPU for determining that the read information conforms to said predetermined format.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the further processing relates to determining whether an individual identified by the read information is a criminal law offender.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the further processing relates to determining whether an individual identified by the read information is an organ donor.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the driver license is presented by a bearer at the first location in connection with a credit card purchase by the bearer and the further processing checks that individual identified by the information on the driver license is authorized to use the credit card.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said information reader is a bar code reader.

11. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said information reader is a magnetic stripe reader.

12. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the information reader is a digital scanner.

13. A method for use in a transaction comprising the steps of:

receiving a credit card or check each having an authorized user along with another document, other than a credit card, at a first location, said another document being issued by an issuer and having information identifying an individual;

reading information from said document at said first location, and

sending the read information to a remote location via a signal path for further processing;

receiving results of the further processing at said first location, said results being used to determine whether or not said individual is said authorized user.

14. The method of claim 13 wherein the information on the document is arranged in a predetermined format corresponding to the issuer and said method further includes the steps of:

determining whether the read information comports with the predetermined format.

15. The method of claim 13 wherein the document is a driver license.

16. The method of claim 13 wherein the method is carried for a credit card transaction.

17. The method of claim 13 wherein the first location is a point of sale.

18. A method for use in connection with an activity, said method comprising the steps of:

receiving an identification document having one of a plurality of formats;

reading information from said identification document, determining the format of said identification document, and parsing the read data in accordance with the determined format;

authenticating the contents of the identification document; and

wherein the activity is carried out at a location selected from the group consisting of a police car, an airport, a sea port, a train station, a border check point, a child day care center, a post office, a gambling establishment, a movie theater, a point of sale for alcohol, a point of sale for tobacco, and a point of sale for lottery ticket purchase.

The method of claim 18 wherein the format of the identification document includes segments each having predetermined values and the authenticating step compares the read information in said segments against their respective predetermined values and authenticates the contents of the document when said comparison meets a predetermined criteria.

20. Apparatus comprising:

at least one information reader at a first location for reading human readable information and machine readable information from an identification document issued by an issuing jurisdiction, the human readable information and machine readable having one of a plurality of formats corresponding to the issuing jurisdiction;

circuitry that receives the human readable information and performs optical character recognition to generate converted human readable information,

circuitry that determines whether at least a portion of the machine readable information or the converted human readable information comports with one of the plurality of formats, and

circuitry that generates a verification signal or outputs at least a portion of the converted human readable information or the machine readable information for further processing.

21. The apparatus of claim 20 , wherein the information reader is at least one of a digital scanner and magnetic reader.

22. The apparatus of claim 20 , wherein the information reader is bar code scanner.

23. The apparatus of claim 20 , wherein the first location is at least one of a point of sale, a police car, a port of entry, an airport, a sea port, a rail station, a border check-point, a child day care center and a Post Office.

24. The apparatus of claim 20 , wherein the human readable information is indicative of at least one of a jurisdiction, name, address, identification number, birth date, sex, organ donor consent, eye color, vehicle class, endorsement, restriction, issue date and expiration date.

25. The apparatus of claim 20 , wherein the machine readable information is indicative of at least one of a jurisdiction, name, address, identification number, birth date, sex, organ donor consent, eye color, vehicle class, endorsement, restriction, issue date and expiration date.

26. The apparatus of claim 20 , wherein the machine readable information is coded in a barcode.

27. The apparatus of claim 20 , wherein the machine readable information is coded in a magnetic stripe.

28. The apparatus of claim 20 , wherein the identification document is coded with machine readable information in accordance with an AAMVA standard.

29. The apparatus of claim 20 , wherein the identification document is a driver's license.

30. The apparatus of claim 20 , wherein the issuing jurisdiction is at least one of a state and a province.

31. The apparatus of claim 20 , wherein the predetermined format pertains to the arrangement of data in one or more tracks of a magnetic stripe.

32. The apparatus of claim 20 , wherein the predetermined format pertains to the arrangement of data in a barcode.

33. The apparatus of claim 20 , wherein the predetermined format pertains to the location of information in a predetermined region of a driver license.

34. The apparatus of claim 20 , wherein the circuitry that receives the human readable information and performs optical character recognition comprises a CPU.

35. The apparatus of claim 20 , wherein the circuitry that determines whether at least a portion of the machine readable information or the converted human readable information comports with the predetermined format comprises a CPU.

36. The apparatus of claim 20 , wherein the information reader is directly coupled to a CPU.

37. The apparatus of claim 20 , wherein the information reader is wirelessly coupled to a CPU.

38. The apparatus of claim 20 , wherein the circuitry that generates a verification signal comprises at least one of a display, an LED and a speaker.

39. The apparatus of claim 20 , wherein the circuitry that outputs at least a portion of the converted human readable information or the machine readable information for further processing comprises a CPU.

40. The apparatus of claim 20 , wherein the verification signal is indicative of at least one of a verified identification document, a fraudulent identification document, an invalid identification document, a tampered identification document and a blank identification document.

41. The apparatus of claim 20 , wherein the outputted information comprises at least a portion of the converted human readable information.

42. The apparatus of claim 20 , wherein the outputted information comprises at least a portion of the machine readable information.

43. A method for use in connection with an activity, said method comprising the steps of:

receiving an identification document having human readable information and machine readable information, said information having one of a plurality of formats;

performing optical character recognition to generate converted human readable information;

determining whether at least a portion of the machine readable information or the converted human readable information comports with one of the plurality of formats; and

outputting a verification signal or at least a portion of the converted human readable information or the machine readable information for further processing.
