Abstract

Fiber optic devices including volume Bragg grating (VBG) elements are disclosed. A fiber optic device may include one or more optical inputs, one or more VBG elements, and one or more optical receivers. Methods for manufacturing VBG elements and for controlling filter response are also disclosed. A VBG chip, and fiber optic devices using such a chip, are also provided. A VBG chip includes a monolithic glass structure onto which a plurality of VBGs have been recorded.

Claims (32)

1. A Bragg grating chip, comprising:

a monolithic, three-dimensional glass structure onto which a first Bragg grating has been recorded at a first location and a second Bragg grating has been recorded at a second location, wherein the first location and the second location are separated from one another in each of two perpendicular directions,

wherein the first Bragg grating is adapted to receive incident light having a wavelength in a fiber optic range and to deflect a first portion of the received incident light to the second Bragg grating,

wherein the first Bragg grating has a first period and a first wave vector, and

wherein the second Bragg grating has a second period that is the same as the first period and a second wave vector that is the same as the first wave vector.

2. The Bragg grating chip of claim 1 , wherein the first Bragg grating is further adapted to pass a second portion of the received incident light out of the glass structure as a first exiting beam that exits the glass structure in a first direction, and

wherein the second Bragg grating is adapted to deflect a first portion of the light received from the first Bragg grating out of the glass structure as a second exiting beam that exits the glass structure in the first direction parallel to the first exiting beam.

3. The Bragg grating chip of claim 1 , wherein the light received by the second Bragg grating has at least one of a spectral envelope and angular content, and wherein the deflection of the received light by the second Bragg grating alters at least one of the spectral envelope and the angular content.

4. The Bragg grating chip of claim 1 , wherein each of the first and second Bragg gratings is an apodized Bragg grating.

5. The Bragg grating chip of claim 1 , wherein the incident light has a plurality of wavelengths in the fiber optic range, the first portion of the received incident light has a first wavelength in the fiber optic range, and the first Bragg grating is transparent to at least one wavelength of the incident light.

6. The Bragg grating chip of claim 5 , further comprising a third Bragg grating recorded onto the glass structure at a third location, the third Bragg grating being adapted to receive light transmitted transparently through the first Bragg grating, and to deflect a second portion of the light received from the first Bragg grating, the second portion having a second wavelength in the fiber optic range, the second wavelength being different from the first wavelength.

7. The Bragg grating chip of claim 6 , further comprising a fourth Bragg grating recorded onto the glass structure at a fourth location,

wherein the fourth Bragg grating is adapted to receive light deflected from the third Bragg grating and to deflect a portion of the light received from the third Bragg grating out of the glass structure as a third exiting beam in the first direction, and

wherein the third exiting beam exits the glass structure parallel to the first exiting beam.

8. The Bragg grating chip of claim 7 , wherein the portion of the light deflected by the fourth Bragg grating has a second wavelength in the fiber optic range, and the third Bragg grating is transparent to at least one wavelength of the incident light.

9. The Bragg grating chip of claim 7 , wherein the third Bragg grating has a third period and a third wave vector, and the fourth Bragg grating has a fourth period that is the same as the third period and a fourth wave vector that is the same as the third wave vector.

10. A Bragg grating chip, comprising:

a monolithic, three-dimensional glass structure onto which a first plurality of Bragg gratings have been recorded, the first plurality of Bragg gratings being aligned along a first direction, and onto which a second plurality of Bragg gratings have been recorded, the second plurality of Bragg gratings being aligned along a second direction that is perpendicular to the first direction,

wherein each Bragg grating in the first plurality is adapted to receive respective light incident onto it along the first direction, and to deflect a respective portion of the light it receives toward a corresponding Bragg grating in the second plurality,

wherein each Bragg grating in the first plurality is transparent to at least one wavelength of the incident light, and

wherein each Bragg grating in the second plurality is adapted to deflect a respective portion of the light received from the corresponding Bragg grating in the first plurality such that the portions deflected by the Bragg gratings in the second plurality exit the glass structure parallel to one another in the first direction.

11. The Bragg grating chip of claim 10 , wherein each of the Bragg gratings is localized in the second direction.

12. The Bragg grating chip of claim 10 , wherein none of the Bragg gratings in the second plurality overlap in the second direction.

13. The Bragg grating chip of claim 10 , wherein each of the Bragg gratings in the second plurality is an apodized Bragg grating.
