Abstract

Method and system for processing a source protocol data unit (PDU). A local router receives the source PDU and determines whether to compress the source PDU or send the source PDU without compression. Where the source PDU is to be compressed, the local router compresses the source PDU and sets a flag indicating that the source PDU is compressed. The local router then transmits the compressed source PDU via a network link.

Claims (26)

1. A method for processing a source protocol data unit (PDU), comprising:

receiving the source PDU at a local router;

the local router determining whether to compress the source PDU or send the source PDU to a network without compression;

if the source PDU is to be compressed, the local router determining whether to re-initialize compression history;

if compression history is to be re-initialized, the local router re-initializing compression history for compressing the source PDU;

the local router compressing the source PDU and setting a flag indicating that the source PDU is compressed; and

the local router transmitting the compressed source PDU via a network link.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising wherein if compression history is not to be re-initialized, the local router compressing the source PDU using a current compression history.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the source PDU received by the local router is based on a first protocol.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the first protocol is based on Fibre Channel.

5. The method of claim 3 , wherein the local router wraps the source PDU in a secondary PDU that is based on a second protocol and sends the secondary PDU to a remote router.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the second protocol is based on TCP/IP.

7. The method of claim 5 , wherein the first protocol and the second protocol are different.

8. The method of claim 5 , wherein the first protocol and the second protocol are the same.

9. The method of claim 5 , wherein the remote router examines flags in the secondary PDU, extracts a payload from the secondary PDU, decompresses the payload and reconstructs the source PDU from the decompressed payload.

10. A network system, comprising:

a host system that generates a source protocol data unit (PDU); and

a local router that receives the source PDU and determines whether to compress the source PDU or send the source PDU to a network without compression; if the source PDU is to be compressed, determines whether to re-initialize compression history; if compression history is to be re-initialized, re-initializes compression history for compressing the source PDU; compresses the source PDU; sets a flag indicating that the source PDU is compressed; and transmits the compressed source PDU via a network link to a remote router.

11. The system of claim 10 , further comprising wherein if compression history is not to be re-initialized, the local router compresses the source PDU using a current compression history.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein the source PDU received by the local router is based on a first protocol.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the first protocol is based on Fibre Channel.

14. The system of claim 12 , wherein the local router wraps the source PDU in a secondary PDU that is based on a second protocol and sends the secondary PDU to the remote router.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the second protocol is based on TCP/IP.

16. The system of claim 14 , wherein the first protocol and the second protocol are different.

17. The system of claim 14 , wherein the first protocol and the second protocol are the same.

18. The system of claim 14 , wherein the remote router examines flags in the secondary PDU, extracts a payload from the secondary PDU, decompresses the payload and reconstructs the source PDU from the decompressed payload.
